Frieze London and the Contemporary Art Society (CAS) have teamed up on a new acquisition fund to support museums across the United Kingdom, which will help offset the shrinking local authority investment in arts and culture facilities, and highlight the fantastic work of regional museums. The Collections Fund at Frieze, an amount which currently stands at £50,000, was awarded to Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art after a competitive application process open to CAS's 70 Museum Members across the UK.

Frieze Names New Artistic Director

Frieze announced today that Abby Bangser, formerly the head of the Americans Foundation for the Serpentine Galleries, will be the new Artistic Director for the Americas and Asia. It’s part of the restructuring that saw Frieze co-founders Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp handing the reigns over to Victoria Siddall, and taking on more advisory positions.

But does this mean we’ll be getting a a Frieze Hong Kong anytime soon? The brass denies it, but who knows.

Peter Doig Painting Leads Sale at Christie’s

After its Essl Collection sale on Monday kicked off the Frieze-week frenzy, Christie’s returned on Thursday night with its main event of the week.

Peter Doig’s first tropical painting led a carefully edited postwar and contemporary auction. The house tried to catch the prevailing mood favoring young artists—like the many being exhibited at this week’s fairs—and the German masters now on view in many of the British capital’s biggest galleries.

Still, the top lot was Doig’s “The Heart of Old San Juan,” dating from 1999, showing an emerald-green basketball court by the sea. The tranquil painting attracted some interest in the salesroom and sold for £4.56 million (about $7.26 million).

Today, Frieze announced the 20 artists who will contribute work to its free sculpture park, on view for the run of both Frieze London and Frieze Masters from October 15 through 19. Curated by Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s Director of Programs, Clare Lilley, the Regent’s Park display includes work by Yayoi Kusama, Ursula von Rydingsvard, and Thomas Schütte, among others.

“Unique in the world’s art fairs, this year’s Frieze Sculpture Park is an intriguing and delightful breath of fresh air featuring artists from across three generations,” Clare Lilley said in a statement.

Gap Inc. Teams up with Frieze Art Fair

Gap has announced a partnership with the contemporary art fair Frieze, kicking off with the New York fair in May and continuing with Frieze fair in London. As part of the partnership, Gap has designed two unique outdoor experiences, called Gap White Space at Frieze, in collaboration with New York-based architects, Leong Leong, to welcome guests at the Frieze Art Fair locations in Randall’s Island, New York and Regent’s Park, London. These experiences are named after the White Space rooms found in select Gap flagship stores across the globe. These rooms feature and test the brand’s newest and most cutting edge items, allowing shoppers to experience Gap product in a unique and exciting environment.

Frieze Masters Brings Big Sales

Millions of dollars worth of art was sold in London last week thanks to the Frieze art fairs. Frieze Masters, which is in its second year and presents works created before 2000, included the sale of Pablo Picasso’s Femme assise au chapeau (Acquavella Galleries) for $7 million, an abstract painting by Willem de Kooning for $8 million and two Jean-Michel Basquiat works for a combined $9.3 million.

Frieze London, which features established contemporary artists as well as promising newcomers, saw fewer big-ticket items. As the event drew to a close, Gagosian Gallery, which presented five highly anticipated works by Jeff Koons, had no confirmed sales. A sculpture by Takashi Murakami being offered by Hauser & Wirth was also still available as the fair winded down.

Frieze week also includes a number of contemporary art auctions and a number of satellite events, which added to the week’s hefty art sales.

Collective, the newest show on the design fair scene, will debut on May 8, 2013 and run through May 11 at Pier 57 in Manhattan. The fair will coincide with the highly anticipated second edition of Frieze New York as well as the various major spring auctions.

The founder and creative director of the fair is architect Steven Learner of the New York-based architecture and interior design firm, Steven Learner Studio. The 70,000 square foot space where the fair will be held was created by Learner and will host over 25 international galleries. The show will also include a series of special programs as well as formal displays.

Collective, which will focus on vintage and contemporary design, aims to cater to both the art and design communities.

Newly Restored Munch Frieze Could Be At Risk

A monumental frieze made between 1909 and 1916 by Edvard Munch (1863-1944) adorns the walls of the University of Oslo’s assembly hall in Norway. The frieze, which includes 11 different Expressionist paintings, underwent a lengthy restoration and conservation process a last year. However, just 20 months after the project was completed, the frieze might be at risk.

Tine Frøysaker, a Norwegian conservator and professor at the University of Oslo, announced that while the exterior of the building that houses the frieze is being restored, harmful dust and debris could be damaging Munch’s masterpiece. Frøysaker, who worked on the frieze, explained that the plaster that is being knocked off the building’s exterior is releasing particles that contain alkaline, which is highly abrasive. If these particles come in contact with the frieze, which is likely since the building is old and impossible to seal off, the paintings could be damaged. Steps have been taken to lessen any impairment by increasing the building’s internal air pressure, which will hopefully keep most particles out of the building.

Frøysaker said that this potentially harmful situation could have been avoided if the exterior restoration was completed before tackling the Munch frieze inside. Work on the building’s exterior is expected to finish during the summer of 2013. Upon completion, conservators will need to assess the paintings to determine if additional restoration is needed.
