Sotheby’s will offer the 12.03 carat Blue Moon Diamond, among the largest known fancy vivid blue diamonds at part of its Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels in Geneva on November 11.

A blue diamond is created when boron is mixed with carbon during the gem’s formation. Graded Fancy Vivid Blue – the highest possible colour grading for blue diamonds, the cushion brilliant-cut stone has been declared Internally Flawless by the GIA and carried an estimate of $ 35-55 million.

The Blue Moon Diamond, one of the world's biggest, most perfect blue diamonds, goes on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County on Saturday.

That's 12 carats of internally flawless gemstone.

The diamond, a saturated blue, is 12.03 carats in all, weighs 2.4 grams and is 0.61 inch at its greatest diameter.

At the New York headquarters of Cora International LLC, Suzette Gomes is spellbound by a sight of rare beauty.

“You can’t describe that blue,” said Gomes, chief executive officer of the diamond-cutting company. “You just drown in it.”

“That blue” refers to the Blue Moon diamond. Cora paid $25.6 million for the uncut, 29.6-carat stone in February.

Colored diamonds are the world’s most expensive stones. A 14.82-carat orange diamond sold for $36 million at Christie’s International in Geneva in November, setting a record $2.4 million a carat. The same month, Sotheby’s sold the Pink Dream, a 59.6-carat pink stone, for $83 million.
