While Angelenos love the new Broad Museum so much that tickets are already sold out through the end of the year, not everyone is happy about L.A.’s newest contemporary art institution.

A subcontractor, Seele Inc., who was responsible for the complicated construction behind its distinctive white mesh facade, is seeking $6.9 million in expenses from the Broad Collection, reports Curbed LA.

When the Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles officially opens on Sept. 20, visitors will be treated to a selection of more than 250 works of contemporary art culled from the private collection of founders Eli and Edythe Broad, museum officials will announce on Friday.

Though many of the pieces have been seen in public before, this will be the most in-depth display of art from the 2,000-piece collection, spotlighting more than 60 artists.

At nearly all museums, the treasures on public display are but a small fraction of the riches within. Gallery space being limited, priceless paintings and rare sculptures are consigned to basements or off-site storage much of the time.

But the soon-to-open Broad museum next to Walt Disney Concert Hall will offer visitors a peek behind the institutional curtain, a concept that is central to the new building's design. Past the elevator, over a stainless steel railing and through a steep stairwell, a patch of glass offers a peek into the museum's storage area, "the vault."

The nearly completed Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles resembles a giant, milky honeycomb, so it was appropriate that on Sunday the place buzzed with activity.

Curious artists, journalists and art world figures streamed through the airy, light-filled space for a one-day sneak peek inside the museum, which is not scheduled to open until Sept. 20. A freight elevator, still lined with plywood, deposited arrivals onto the museum's top floor, a 35,000-square-foot space not yet broken up by partition walls.

A sound installation by Swedish artist BJ Nilsen hummed and hissed, echoing under the soaring ceiling as shards of light leaked through 318 skylights, glimmering against bare concrete and unfinished wood.

The Broad museum will open Sept. 20 as the downtown showcase for Eli and Edythe Broad's contemporary art collection, the founding couple announced Thursday. As promised, admission will be free. But it'll cost $10 to get a one-day sneak preview Feb. 15.

The opening art display in September will offer an array of greatest hits from the more than 2,000 pieces the Broads have amassed. The show will range through some 60 years of post-World War II art, arranged in "predominantly chronological" order from the 1950s to a recently acquired massive video installation created in 2012.

Joanne Heyler, the Director and Chief Curator of the forthcoming Broad Museum in downtown Los Angeles, has revealed select details surrounding the institution’s inaugural exhibit. The Broad, which will showcase the extensive collection of the financier/philanthropist Eli Broad and his wife, Edythe, will open to the public in fall 2015. The museum was originally slated to open in 2014, but officials announced in February that the date had been pushed to 2015 due to construction delays.

Designed by the New York City-based architecture firm Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, the $140-million Broad boasts 120,000 square feet and will serve as the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation, a lending library of postwar and contemporary artworks founded by the Broads in 1984.
