After five years of examination, the Bosch Research and Conservation Project (BRCP) has determined that two masterpieces attributed to the Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch were unlikely to have been painted by the master himself.

The results of the research indicate that Bosch's Christ Carrying the Cross (ca. 1515-16) and the world famous The Seven Deadly Sins (ca. 1500)— which hangs in Madrid's Prado Museum—were probably produced in the studio of the artist, but not painted by Bosch himself, the Dutch news agency ANP reports.

Musician Sting and wife Trudie Styler are selling more than 200 items from their art collection, previously housed in their former family home in London.

Works by Matisse, Picasso, Gustav Klimt and Ben Nicholson will be offered at auction at Christie's in February, as well as Sting's Steinway piano.

The auction house said the couple had collected the works "with passion and knowledge" over 20 years.

There’s more than $2.1 billion of art for sale at the New York auctions next month. Almost half of it, including an Andy Warhol painting belonging to billionaire Steven A. Cohen, already has a buyer before the first paddle goes up.

When the two-week sales start Nov. 4, $1 billion worth of paintings and sculptures are guaranteed to sell by Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips at minimum prices regardless of what happens in the salesroom. The companies are lining up deep-pocketed backers for the guarantees or financing them with their own money -- a risky proposition because they can end up owning the works if there are no takers.

A Richard Avedon photograph has reportedly been withdrawn from an auction at Christie's over complaints by the Avedon Foundation.

The photo, a 1962 portrait of ballet icon Rudolf Nureyev, belongs to ballet dancer Eric Walters, who says he bought it at Christie's in 1995 for just $1,610, according to the New York Post. But when Walters tried to sell the photo this year at the same auction house with a high estimate of $15,000, the Avedon Foundation, which is based in New York, stepped in.

Though Christie’s elected not to publicly list the estimated sale price for Louise Bourgeois’s Spider (1997), which will be auctioned as lot 10 in the house’s postwar and contemporary evening sale on November 10 in New York, it is high enough to break some major records.

ARTnews has learned that the enormous sculpture will have a low estimate of $25 million and a high estimate of $35 million.

Christie’s Important Jewels sale, held October 20 in New York, brought $20.0 million, with white and yellow diamonds fetching the highest prices.

The top lot for the sale was a cushion-cut fancy vivid yellow diamond ring of 75.56 carats, which realized $3.6 million, within its pre-sale estimate of $3 million to $4 million.

A masterpiece of the American pop art movement hits the auction block in New York next month, expected to set a new record for artist Roy Lichtenstein and continue a record-setting year in art sales.

Christie’s has set the low estimate for Lichtenstein’s iconic “Nurse” at $80 million, but believes it could fetch in excess of $100 million at a specially curated evening sale in New York on November 9.

As art sales face their first major test since the August financial market rout, auction houses are jockeying not only for trophy artworks but also for the best positions to highlight them at the November auctions in New York. The result is a shakeup in a schedule that for years was tightly coordinated, with Christie’s and Sotheby’s traditionally alternating who goes first. Even the weekends are no longer off limits; in a surprising move, Phillips, the smallest of the three, switched its main sale to a Sunday.
