A recent investigation into France’s Sherlock database, which catalogues the inventories of national cultural centers, revealed that the country has lost track of nearly 23,000 pieces of state-owned art. While most missing works are the result of poor documentation, others have been stolen. Among the elusive works are a mahogany bed that should be in the Palace of Versailles and a Joan Miro tapestry that was loaned to the French embassy in Washington, D.C.
