On this, her first visit to Texas, Almudena Ros de Barbero is fully prepared for the state’s tendency to do things in a very big way.

But in this case, she’s the conduit to big by curating the first of two anniversary blockbusters at the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University. Say hello to “The Abelló Collection: A Modern Taste for European Masters,” which opened this weekend.

Ros is official curator of the private collection of Juan Abelló and his wife, Anna Gamazo, whom Meadows director Mark Roglán describes as two of the top collectors in the world.

The Morgan Library & Museum, which has been without a leader since late last summer, looked West to bring back a longtime New Yorker as its new director, choosing Colin B. Bailey, who has served since 2013 as director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco but was for many years before that the chief curator at the Frick Collection.

Mr. Bailey, a well-regarded Renoir scholar, succeeds William M. Griswold, who left last year to take over the Cleveland Museum of Art. Mr. Bailey comes to the Morgan almost a decade after an expansion, designed by Renzo Piano, enlarged not only the museum’s floor plan but also its ambitions, moving it more actively into contemporary art, collaborations with other institutions and high-end acquisitions.

Bartholomew Ryan, an Irish-born curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, will be the new Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum.

Mr. Ryan, 38, a native of Dublin, begins his duties here on May 18. He replaces Nicholas Chambers, who left in November to return to his native Australia.

Mr. Ryan earned a bachelor’s degree in drama and theater studies from Trinity College in Dublin. In 2002, he moved to New York City, where he waited tables while working as an actor, he said in a telephone interview.

Anyone who walks through the International Pop show at the Walker Art Center will come to a large white canvas marked with a number of black splotches.

It's not an ink blot test, but a portrait of President John F. Kennedy that demonstrates the power of pop art.

"There's no face," Walker Curator Bart Ryan said. "It's just a black silhouette with a tie and a finger pointing."

Yet, with the shape of the hair, and the set of the shoulders it's definitely the iconic president. The portrait by Italian artist Sergio Lombardo is classic pop art, an artistic image drawn from popular culture to pack a punch.

Kimbell Art Museum curator and former National Gallery intern C.D. Dickerson has been named curator and head of sculpture and decorative arts at the National Gallery of Art, the museum announced Thursday.

Beginning July 27, Dickerson will oversee a collection of more than 3,500 works of European and American sculpture, decorative arts and medals. He succeeds Mary Levkoff, who left in July to become the director of Hearst Castle in California.

Cheekwood is taking important first steps towards the historic restoration of its Mansion, which is slated to debut in 2017. Further building on its reputation as “one of the finest examples of an American Country Place Era estates in the nation,” Cheekwood will refurnish the lower levels of the Mansion to reflect the lifestyle and setting of the 1930s era; originally used by its first residents, Mabel and Leslie Cheek, and designed by legendary landscape and structural architect Bryant Fleming. Several rooms in the 1929 Cheek family home will be restored to furnishings and décor representative of the original period, including rooms that have never before been on view to the general public.

To spearhead this initiative, Cheekwood has hired Leslie B. Jones as its new Curator of Decorative Arts & Historic Interpretation, following her time as the Curator and Director of Historical Resources and Programming for the White House Historical Association in Washington, DC.

Shannon Stratton has been named chief curator at New York’s Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). Stratton will assume the new role in June, succeeding MAD’s retiring chief curator, Lowery Stokes Sims. “Shannon brings a bold curatorial vision to MAD, combining energetic new thinking with leadership skills honed over twelve years as the founder of a non-profit art space,” Chairman Lewis Kruger said in a statement, referring to Stratton’s work as the executive director of Threewalls, a contemporary art organization in Chicago.

One of the most comprehensive displays of works by Diego Velázquez is opening this week at Paris’s Grand Palais. Showcasing 119 artworks from museums around the globe, it will cover the breadth of his career. But pulling together this large retrospective of the influential 17th-century Spanish painter was no easy feat for curator Guillaume Kientz.

Mr. Kientz, the chief conservationist for Spanish paintings at the Louvre, which is jointly producing the exhibition, spent the past two years negotiating with private collectors and museums to assemble some of the Spanish master’s most famous works in what will be the Grand Palais’s blockbuster show of the year.

Bud and Suzanne Selig, who have been generous contributors to the Milwaukee Art Museum, will donate $2.5 million to create and support a chief curator position at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Suzanne Selig serves on the Phoenix Museum Board of Trustees, allowing her to extend her artistic support beyond Milwaukee and the Calatrava addition to the museum. The Seligs have homes in Milwaukee and Arizona.

Works damaged in two devastating fires in 1945 that destroyed around 400 paintings and sculptures stored in Berlin’s Friedrichshain bunker, including pieces by Caravaggio, Rubens and Donatello, are being presented in a new exhibition at the Bode Museum. “The Missing Museum: the Berlin Sculpture and Paintings Collections 70 Years after World War II”, which opened March 19, explores ethical and practical decisions museums face in regards to war-damaged works, namely whether they should be restored or left in their ruined state as a permanent reminder of the horrors of the conflict.

“One of the exhibition’s objectives is to bring these works back from oblivion into people’s consciousness,” says Julien Chapuis, the museum’s deputy director and curator of the show, adding that many of the pieces have not been exhibited since 1939.
