Starting in 2015, Art Basel and BMW will support emerging artists by awarding the BMW Art Journey, enabling them to go on their own journey of creative discovery. Functioning as a mobile studio, the BMW Art Journey can take artists almost anywhere in the world – to develop new ideas, discover new themes, and envision new creative projects.

The BMW Art Journey is open to artists who are showing in Positions and Discoveries, Art Basel's sectors for emerging artists in Miami Beach and Hong Kong. Two international expert juries, one for Positions and one for Discoveries, will determine a shortlist of three artists per sector and invite them to submit proposals for a journey to a destination of their choice.

For its third edition (though the first to take place in March), Art Basel Hong Kong has racked up 231 galleries hailing from 37 countries — over half of them with spaces in Asia and Asia-Pacific. New additions include Paris’s kamel mennour, Zurich’s Mai 36 Galerie, Berlin’s Mehdi Chouakri, and New York’s Andrea Rosen Gallery, among others. Running from March 15 to 17, 2015, the fair will consist of five sections: “Galleries,” featuring 177 of the exhibitors; “Insights,” dedicated to 34 galleries with Asia-Pacific spaces; “Discoveries,” featuring one- and two-person emerging artist showcases from 20 galleries; “Encounters,” for large-scale sculpture; and the “Film” section, which debuted last year, and will be curated again by Li Zhenhua.

Research on a group of related folk art portraits has yet to yield the identity of the artist. There are neither signed examples nor enough identified sitters within the group to help establish a geographic foundation to support an attribution. A recent addition to the group of known examples that can firmly be credited to this hand on a stylistic basis has been found, however, and opens up a new avenue for research.
