Christopher Bedford, Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, has announced that Baltimore businessman, author, and collector Stephen M. Salny has made a promised gift to the museum of 48 works on paper created by some of today’s leading contemporary artists, including 11 lithographs by Ellsworth Kelly. Among the other artists represented in the gift are Josef Albers, Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Damien Hirst, Jasper Johns, Sol Lewitt, Brice Marden, Robert Motherwell, and Sean Scully.

Salny’s gift will augment strengths of the Rose Art Museum collection, which includes paintings and other works by some of the artists included, notably Kelly, Johns, Motherwell, and Frankenthaler, while also extending its holdings in new directions, including the first work by Hirst to by acquired by the museum.

One of the most striking pieces in the exhibition dedicated to the late US artist Joseph Cornell, which is due to open at the Royal Academy of Arts in London this week (Wanderlust, July 4-September 27), has been loaned by the leading US artist Jasper Johns.

The wooden box construction, Untitled (Owl Habitat), late 1940s, shows a ghostly print cutout of an owl perched above a bark slab. The piece reflects Cornell’s working patterns as he often assembled his objects during twilight hours, identifying with the nocturnal owl.

Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has acquired two sculptures and two paintings by artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010): "Maman," 1999 (bronze, stainless steel, and marble), "Quarantania," 1947-1953 (bronze, painted white with blue and black, and stainless steel), "Connecticutiana," 1944-1945 (oil on wood), and "Untitled," 1947 (oil on canvas).

“Louise Bourgeois contributed significantly to shaping American narrative with work that spanned most of the twentieth century and helped inform the growing feminist art movement. We’re eager to share her acclaimed sculptures as well as her rare paintings which offer visitors a chance to explore her work in two and three-dimensions,” said Crystal Bridges Executive Director Rod Bigelow.

Jasper Johns is behind a new venue in New York’s Meatpacking District dedicated exclusively to artist-curated exhibitions. Last year, Johns suggested that the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the non-profit he founded with the composer John Cage, convert a 496-square-foot room next to its offices into a project space. (It was previously used for the occasional meeting.) The board agreed. With that, the Other Room—the foundation’s first foray into public programming—was born.

A former longtime Jasper Johns assistant was ordered Thursday to spend 18 months behind bars after admitting he stole artworks from the pop artist's Connecticut studio and arranged for them to be sold by a Manhattan gallery for nearly $10 million.

James Meyer, 53, of Salisbury, Connecticut, was also ordered to pay $13 million in restitution and to forfeit $3.9 million.

U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken said he believed Meyer was genuinely remorseful and was primarily a "kind, caring, thoughtful" man who committed a serious offense, selling unauthorized artworks on at least three occasions from 2006 to 2011, pocketing more than $4 million.

A major private contemporary art collection with a value estimated at $400 million is being donated to the Art Institute of Chicago by local philanthropists Stefan Edlis and Gael Neeson, in what the museum is calling the largest gift of art in its history and a coup for the institution and the city.

Numbering 42 pieces, stocked with iconic works by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and many other instantly recognizable names and spanning a time period from 1953 to 2011, experts called it one of the most significant collections of its kind in the world.

Douglas Druick, President and Eloise W. Martin Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, announced today that Chicago attorney Irving Stenn Jr. has given the museum more than 100 drawings from his exceptional collection of seminal works produced in the 1960s. The drawings, by a who's-who of contemporary artists, represent a foundational period in the history of drawing when the way works on paper were made, used, and appreciated was undergoing radical change.

The gift includes works by Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden, and Fred Sandback, as well as pieces by Agnes Denes, Jasper Johns, Donald Judd, Nam June Paik, and Ellsworth Kelly.

It’s a small work of art — precisely the size of an old Savarin coffee can jammed with artist’s paintbrushes — but in the history of postwar art and in the career of Jasper Johns, one of the most important artists of the last half century, it looms large.

Created in 1960, “Painted Bronze” has been a fixture for more than three decades at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it has been on long-term loan from Mr. Johns’s personal collection. But now it will migrate north to a permanent home at the Museum of Modern Art, which will receive the sculpture as a promised gift from the collectors Henry R. Kravis and his wife, Marie-Josée Kravis, the Museum of Modern Art’s president, who recently bought it.

The Merce Cunningham Trust, which was founded to preserve the artistic legacy of choreographer Merce Cunningham, has announced it will bestow major gifts to two art organizations, reports Art Forum.

One gift of $375,000 will be given to the Foundation for Contemporary Arts to establish a Merce Cunningham award. The FCA, which was founded by John Cage and Jasper Johns, aims to support, sponsor, and promote innovative work in the arts by individuals, groups, or organizations. The Merce Cunningham award at the FCA will be biannual, and its purpose is to give recognition of outstanding achievement that reflects the spirit and creativity of Cunningham.

Allentown Art Museum Celebrates Pop Art Prints

From the Fabulous '40s through the Swinging '60s to now, Pop Art's style has endured.

Earlier this year, the Allentown Art Museum explored the beginning of Pop Art's story in "British Pop Art Prints," which revealed how American Pop Art grew from a movement that started in London in the late '40s and early '50s by British artists such as Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi.

Then came the Americans — Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg — who rose from relative obscurity in New York to become some of the world's best-known artists, and had an influence on everything from design to fashion and film.

The museum explores that story in "American Pop: The Prints," an exhibit of works from the museum collection and Muhlenberg College that serves as a companion exhibit to "Robert Indiana from A to Z," a retrospective of work by one of the Pop movement's founding fathers.
