The city of Venice is considering selling works by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Marc Chagall. The city’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, told the Italian news agency Ansa that he may seek to reduce Venice’s soaring debt by deaccessioning major pieces from the city’s most famous public museums.

“The Moderns: Chagall, Degas, Léger, Miró, Picasso and More...,” an exhibition that fills nearly all of the sprawling galleries at the Nassau County Museum of Art, in Roslyn Harbor, is really two shows in one. The first, subtitled “Selections From the Saltzman Family Collection,” displays 35 works owned by Arnold A. Saltzman, the museum’s founding president and a major benefactor, who died last year at age 97.

Venetian Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has revealed plans to sell off some of the city's artworks to help settle the municipality's mounting debts. The shortlisted works include notable paintings such as Gustav Klimt's Judith II (Salome) (1909).

According to Der Standard, Klimt's masterpiece, which hangs in the International Gallery of Contemporary Art in Ca ‘Pesaro, has been estimated to sell for €70 million ($79.6 million).

Russia has blocked Sweden from borrowing Marc Chagall paintings for an upcoming exhibition of the artist's work, the Millesgarden Museum in Stockholm said Thursday, following a diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

Museum curator Onita Wass told AFP that the museum has been forced to cancel the exhibition of 48 works by French-Russian artist Chagall and several of his contemporaries. 

"We worked in cooperation with the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg to put together an exhibition on Marc Chagall and the Russia of his time, but the culture ministry didn't permit us to borrow the works... forcing us to cancel the exhibition," said Wass.

The collection of the highly regarded sculptor and philanthropist Lolo Sarnoff will be presented over several several sales in New York and London throughout the spring. The selection of work on offer  spans important Impressionist & Modern Art, follows Sotheby’s legendary six-day, 700 lot auction in 1978 of the collection of Lolo Sarnoff’s step-father, Robert von Hirsch. Works by artists such as Picasso, Chagall and Renoir are expected to sell for above the estimates. 

Warren Weitman, Chairman of Sotheby’s Americas, commented: “It is a great privilege for Sotheby’s to present works from this extraordinary collection."

Sotheby's New York announced it will offer the collection of Chicago philanthropist Jerome H. Stone over a series of auctions this spring. Stone assembled the collection over the course of the 1950s and '60s with the help of his wife Evelyn. It consists of blue chip works by artists such as Fernand Leger, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Juan Gris, and Marc Chagall, that together are expected to bring in more than $40 million.

Stone, who built his family business, Stone Container Corporation, into a national multi-billion dollar corporation, and later founded the International Alzheimer's Association, often bought from leading dealers including Pierre Matisse and Sidney Janis.

The great spectrum of some of the Palm Springs Art Museum's most treasured artworks from the 20th century are now on display in the museum's newly named Joseph Clayes III Exhibition Wing.

Works by masters such as Willem de Kooning, Henry Moore, Marc Chagall and others are on display in the museum's Clayes Exhibition Wing, made possible through a $1 million donation from the Joseph Clayes Charitable Trust. This wing, located near the front of the building on the north side, was formerly the McCallum Wing.

From the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, 140 works by Marc Chagall, one of the best-loved artists of the 20th century, are now in Italy for the first time. So universal as to be known, recognized and loved by everyone, he of all the artists of the last century remained true to himself while going through wars and catastrophes as well as political and technological revolutions. Through drawings, some oil paintings, gouaches, lithographs, etchings and watercolors, the show reveals an artistic vision influenced by Chagallʼs great love for his wife Bella and grief over her early death in 1944. It traces the course of his life and his art, a mixture of the major European traditions, from his original Jewish and Russian culture to the meeting with French avant-garde painting.

Curated by Ronit Sorek and produced by DART Chiostro del Bramante and the Arthemisia Group in collaboration with the Israel Museum under the patronage of Roma Capitale, the exhibition Chagall. Love and Life will be held in the Chiostro del Bramante from March 16 to July 26, 2015.

Marc Chagall's drafts for the famous stained-glass windows at the St. Stephen Church in Mainz, Germany, designed in 1982 will go on display in the city next week before joining the permanent collection of the Diözesanmuseum (Diocesan Museum) in Tübingen, "Art Magazin" reports.

The hand-sketched plans for the magnificent blue windows were purchased for €70,000 ($78,000) by a group of local businessmen and the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the St. Stephan Church. The plans became available after they failed to sell at a Sotheby's auction in New York last year.

A man who tried to sell stolen paintings worth a fortune, including works by Marc Chagall and Diego Rivera, was sentenced Friday to more than four years in state prison.

Raul Espinoza pleaded no contest to one count of receiving property stolen in 2008 from the Encino home of an elderly couple, Los Angeles prosecutors said.

The whereabouts of a dozen modern paintings from the home of Anton and Susan Roland remained a mystery for more than six years until a Los Angeles police detective got a tip in September that someone in Europe was trying to broker a deal to sell the art.
