This February, the Hammer Museum at UCLA presents the West Coast debut of “Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957,” the first comprehensive U.S. museum exhibition on Black Mountain College, a small, experimental school in North Carolina which had a profound impact that continues to influence art practice and pedagogy today.

The exhibition, which will run from Feb. 21 through May 15, 2016, chronicles how Black Mountain College became a seminal meeting place and dynamic crossroads for many of the artists, musicians, poets and thinkers who would become leading practitioners of the postwar period.

What do all the things in this odd-sounding inventory have in common? Artist John Baldessari, of course. This list is a distillation of MOCA director Philippe Vergne's enthusiastic tribute speech at Saturday night's edition of the museum's annual fundraising gala, this time with Baldessari as its guest of honor.

Sotheby’s has announced that its upcoming spring auctions of Contemporary Art in New York will feature a selection of works donated by artists in support of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles. While the list of donations has not yet been finalized, approximately 35 works will be offered in Sotheby’s evening and day sales on May 12, 2015, and May 13, 2015. Proceeds from the auction will benefit MOCA’s endowment.

All of the artists who have donated works to the sale, including John Baldessari, Mark Bradford, Mark Grotjahn, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, and Ed Ruscha, have strong ties to MOCA.

Former Dodgers President Jamie McCourt and heiress and philanthropist Aileen Getty are among the four new trustees announced Thursday by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

Investor and philanthropist Andrew Nikou and art collector Chara Schreyer also joined MOCA's board of trustees.

“They each have a commitment and passion for civic and culture engagement that is inspiring,” MOCA Director Philippe Vergne said in the announcement. “As a group, they represent well how we are continuing to establish the museum’s national and international footprint.”

Many of the biggest museums around Southern California will offer free general admission to the public for one day only on Saturday, Jan. 31, as part of the 10th annual "Museums Free-For-All" program.

Among the participating museums this year will be the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the California Science Center and the Skirball Cultural Center. The full list of participating institutions, below, comprises 25 individual venues, including some museums that already offer free admission on a daily basis.

The email said: “Across the street from your building/Black Mercedes.” It was a shining Saturday morning, and Jeffrey Deitch was parked by the curb with a chauffeur. The car seemed surprisingly flashy, a throwback to the Reagan ’80s. But Mr. Deitch, who resigned last year as the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, has permanently left the nonprofit realm. He is back in New York, buying and selling art again, and trying to keep up with pretty fast company.

At 62, Mr. Deitch is a diminutive, wiry man who was dressed in a purple suit and wearing his trademark goggly glasses.

Andy Warhol’s 102-part painting “Shadows” is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles. The exhibition marks the first West Coast presentation of the monumental work, which was executed by the Pop art pioneer between 1978 and 1979. “Andy Warhol: Shadows” is organized by the work’s owner,  New York’s Dia Art Foundation, and coordinated by MOCA’s Senior Curator Bennett Simpson.

Warhol is best known for his appropriation of images from popular culture, including celebrity portraits, advertisements, and newspaper images, but in the last decade of his career, he began experimenting with abstraction. Warhol developed a fascination with shadows and in the late 1970s, they became subjects in their own right.

On Wednesday, September 11, 2014, the Board of Trustees of the Dia Art Foundation announced that it has chosen Jessica Morgan, a curator at Tate Modern in London, to be its new director. Morgan, who has held her current position at the Tate since 2010, was previously the chief curator at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art as well as a curator at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Morgan will make the move to New York in January 2015.

Dia, which turned forty this year, has offices in Manhattan’s artsy Chelsea neighborhood as well as a sprawling exhibition space in Beacon, New York -- an up-and-coming town about 90 minutes north of New York City.

The longtime rift between the Museum of Contemporary Art’s board of trustees and the city of North Miami turned into a physical breakup Wednesday as the nonprofit that has overseen MOCA moved its employees out of the city-owned building and announced plans to establish a new arts organization.

The new Institute of Contemporary Art will open a temporary space in November at the Moore Building in Miami’s Design District, according to a statement from board co-chairs Irma Braman and Ray Ellen Yarkin.
