The Malaysian curator and art advisor Adeline Ooi has been appointed Art Basel's director Asia. Ooi, who has been Art Basel's VIP relations manager for Southeast Asia for the past two years, takes up the post next month, and will help deliver the third edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong next spring (15-17 March).

Ooi co-founded the Kuala Lumpur-based consultancy RogueArt in 2009, which focuses on cultural projects, exhibitions and publications, and advises corporate collections about sourcing works.

For its third edition (though the first to take place in March), Art Basel Hong Kong has racked up 231 galleries hailing from 37 countries — over half of them with spaces in Asia and Asia-Pacific. New additions include Paris’s kamel mennour, Zurich’s Mai 36 Galerie, Berlin’s Mehdi Chouakri, and New York’s Andrea Rosen Gallery, among others. Running from March 15 to 17, 2015, the fair will consist of five sections: “Galleries,” featuring 177 of the exhibitors; “Insights,” dedicated to 34 galleries with Asia-Pacific spaces; “Discoveries,” featuring one- and two-person emerging artist showcases from 20 galleries; “Encounters,” for large-scale sculpture; and the “Film” section, which debuted last year, and will be curated again by Li Zhenhua.

At long last, Art Basel has full ownership of its Hong Kong edition, with parent company MCH Swiss Exhibition (Basel) Ltd. having finally acquired the remaining 40 percent of shares in Asian Art Fairs Limited in Hong Kong.

Art Basel's purchase of Asian Art Fairs was first announced on July 1, 2011. At that time, MCH Group picked up 60 percent of the company's shares, with the option of enacting a complete buyout in 2014.

By the time Art Basel Hong Kong opened to VIPs on May 14, Edouard Malingue had already sold out his entire inventory of paintings. He spent the rest of the fair fending off disappointed would-be buyers.

“Some of my clients got really upset with my staff and I had to intervene,” said Hong-Kong-based Malingue, after all seven works by Chinese painter Yuan Yuan were sold in advance of the fair. “I explained that we’ve been selling to new collectors and the artist isn’t a factory.”

From May 23-26, 2013, Art Basel will host 245 exhibitors at their first show in Hong Kong, which will replace the region’s biggest art fair, Art HK. Held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, Art Basel Hong Kong will feature works from emerging artists as well as 20^th century masters from both Asia and the West. While Art Basel currently runs two major international shows in Switzerland and Miami Beach, the organization is striving to maintain an emphasis on the Asian region for the Hong Kong fair.

Top galleries from 35 countries will meet at Art Basel Hong Kong, which is divided into four categories: Galleries, Insights, Discoveries, and Encounters. Galleries will present over 170 modern and contemporary exhibitors; Insights will feature galleries solely from Asia and the Asia-Pacific region; Discoveries presents a showcase of one and two-person exhibitions by emerging international contemporary artists; and Encounters features large-scale sculptural and installation works by artists from around the globe.

Exhibitors at the upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong show include Dominique Levy Gallery (New York), Cecilia de Torres, Ltd. (New York), Wentrup (Berlin), Galeria Pedro Cera (Lisbon), Leo Xu Projects (Shanghai), Blindspot Gallery (Hong Kong), and Schoeni Art Gallery (Hong Kong).
