Every December, as the temperature starts to dip, dealers, collectors, interior designers, curators, and a variety of other art and design enthusiasts head to Miami Beach. The art world’s elite have been making the pilgrimage south since 1989, when the Art Miami fair launched, transforming the city's cultural scene forever. In 2000, Art Basel kicked off a stateside edition of its seminal fair in sunny Florida, spawning a flurry of satellite shows and related happenings.

With the close of the recent Houston Fine Art Fair this past Saturday, comes news that Rick Friedman, founder of Hamptons Expo Group (HEG), has sold Houston and his roster of fairs—including ArtAspen, ArtHamptons, and the Palm Springs Fine Art—to Atlanta-based Urban Expositions.

Friedman told artnet News via email: "After 25 years in the business, the last nine as CEO of HEG, I'm ready to step back, offering my expertise as a consultant, and see what might be achieved next."

After the flurry of New York art fairs and Art Basel in Hong Kong, we're looking forward to the fair of all fairs, Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland this June. There are a total of 283 galleries participating, and the main section of the show, the "Galleries" sector, will showcase 222 galleries from around the world while its "Feature" sector will show curatorial projects from 30 galleries. Solo presentations of emerging or young artists will be in the "Statements" sector, where all 16 galleries are completely new to the Swiss fair.

Hans Haacke, a father of Conceptual art and one of its chief political firebrands, has often made works incorporating lists, visually unlovely but highly effective ways to show how the world works. If you were to borrow the technique to show the unusual position Mr. Haacke has occupied in the art world for more than 50 years, the list might look something like this:

1. He has resisted allowing his face to be photographed, because he says that artists are too often fetishized as personalities.

2. He does not allow his work to be shown in art fairs and has attended only one, in Germany in the late 1960s, which so disgusted him that he flew back home to New York the next day. (“It was held in a circus tent, if you can believe that,” he said.)

From May 27 – 31, 2015, Reed Exhibitons will bring FIAC, one of the world’s leading international art fairs, from Paris to Los Angeles. A convergence of FIAC’s forty year history of dynamic growth and the city’s rise as a cultural capital, under the stewardship of Director Jill Silverman van Coenegrachts, FIAC LA will establish a new paradigm for the international art fair. Set against the backdrop of one of America’s fastest growing neighborhoods, FIAC LA will bring a program of modern masters, contemporary art, architecture and design to Downtown’s Los Angeles Convention Center.

FIAC was founded forty years ago as a fair for gallerists by gallerists, with an aim to present a curated vision of contemporary art to a wider public. Over the years Reed Exhibitions, has invented, explored and expanded the fair. during the last decade, fiac has become one of the three most important art fairs in the world. In 2013, FIAC welcomed more than 75,000 visitors and over 100 international museum groups to the Grand Palais.

Liz Lees and Meg Wendy, both well-known producers of art and antiques shows, have formed a partnership to co-produce the New York Ceramics Fair, which is in its 15^th year. Lees, who formed Caskey-Lees with her husband, Bill Caskey, in 1985, said, “I am very pleased that Meg and I have joined forces. Her depth of experience in the world of art fair production, particularly in New York, is unparalleled and will prove invaluable to insuring the growth of the New York Ceramics Fair.”

The New York Ceramics Fair will take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Bohemian National Hall in New York from January 22 through January 26, 2014. The show will feature more than 25 leading ceramics dealers from the U.S., Europe and England including Leo Kaplan Ltd. (New York), Sylvia Powell Decorative Arts (Great Britain), Philip Suval Inc. (Virginia) and Lynda Willauer Antiques (Massachusetts).

The opening night preview on January 21, 2014 will mark the start of the highly anticipated event known as Americana Week in New York.

The anxiously awaited event, Art Basel, begins tonight, December 5, with a VIP preview and runs through Sunday, December 9. Now in its 11^th year, Art Basel has become a defining event in the art world and each year the city of Miami is taken over by collectors, curators, artists, celebrities, and art enthusiasts as well as a host of art fairs.

Taking place at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel features over 260 big-name galleries from around the world and exhibits works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20^th and 21^st centuries. Renowned for its support of young and emerging artists and galleries, Art Basel includes performance art, public art projects, lectures, and video art installations. Some exhibitor highlights include Acquavella Galleries, Mary Boone Gallery, Gagosian Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Lisson Gallery, and White Cube, among many others.

Regarded as Miami art week’s anchor fair, Art Miami got a head start on Art Basel and hosted a VIP preview on December 4 at the Art Miami Pavilion in the city’s Wynwood Arts District. The fair, which features modern and contemporary offerings from more than 125 international galleries, runs from December 5 through December 9. While Art Basel tends to be spotlighted during Miami’s art week, Art Miami is the original and longest-running contemporary art fair to be held in the area with 23 years under its belt. Exhibitors include Douglas Dawson Gallery, Eli Klein Fine Art, Haunch of Venison, Hollis Taggart Gallery, Jerald Melberg Gallery, Michael Goedhuis, and Waterhouse & Dodd.

This year, Art Miami coincides with the inaugural CONTEXT art fair, which features 50 galleries representing emerging and mid-career artists. Located in an ultramodern pavilion adjacent to Art Miami, CONTEXT boasts indoor and outdoor projects as well as solo artist installations, curated projects, and multimedia exhibits. Between Art Miami and CONTEXT, there will be over 200,000 square feet of exhibition space and over 250 participating galleries.

Another highlight of the city’s art week is Scope Miami, which opened on December 4 with a VIP preview and will run through December 9 at a new location in the midtown arts district. With a 100,000 square foot pavilion, Scope features 20 new galleries as part of its “Breeder Program” and 85 established exhibitors. Besides modern and contemporary art, there will be design, music, and fashion offerings.

Pulse Miami opens to the public on December 6 and runs through December 9 at The Ice Palace Studios. One of Art Basel’s many satellite fairs, Pulse is in its eighth year and features 86 international galleries exhibiting works on paper, paintings, sculptures, performances, installations, and video art. Pulse also includes its signature series, Pulse Projects, a selection of installations proposed by galleries and not-for-profit institutions. This year’s Pulse Projects includes a short film by Zackary Drucker shown earlier this year at MoMA PS1, marble installations courtesy of Venske & Spanle and Margaret Thatcher Projects, and a special screening of street artist Invader’s Art 4 Space, courtesy of Jonathan LeVine Gallery.

While there are countless fairs, events, parties, concerts, and openings happening in Miami this week, one not to be missed affair is the Masterpieces from the Berardo Collection exhibit at the Gary Nader Art Centre. Opening on December 5, the show features pieces from one of the finest modern and contemporary art collections in existence. Hand-picked from the private holdings of Joe Berardo, a Portuguese mogul, the 110 works are worth $500 million. Featured artists include Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, and many more.

After two years in beta, Art.sy’s public version went live this past Monday. Using intuitive sites such as Pandora and Netflix as guides, Art.sy gets to know its users and presents them with suggestions and recommendations based on their individual likes and dislikes. Art.sy offers a free repository of 20,000 and counting digitized fine art images as well as an art appreciation guide. Art.sy can already count 275 galleries, private collectors, and 50 museums such as the Dallas Museum of Art, SFMoMA, and Fondation Beyeler as partners.

A start-up backed by millions of dollars in venture capital from art world giants such as Larry Gagosian and Dasha Zhukova, Art.sy already has 600,000 registered users. The site is moving past mere image sharing and has begun partnering with major art fairs, serving as the exclusive online platform for Design Miami/ in December and the Armory Show in March.

Art.sy offers a unique experience to collectors, allowing them to speak with a specialist, connect directly to a gallery, or submit offers on works remotely. A different feature on the site will allow collectors to buy outright as long as the dealer chooses to utilize the e-commerce option. Art.sy plans to bring in most of its revenue from sales commissions on works sold through the site.
