The Brooklyn Museum announced this evening that it has named Anne Pasternak, president and artistic director of Creative Time, as its next director. The appointment completely upends the well-established career path to the directorship of a major museum, and makes Ms. Pasternak, who has virtually no museum experience, one of the few women helming a top museum in the U.S.

Current director Arnold Lehman had previously announced he will retire, after 17 years, next month.

Laura Raicovich comes to the Queens Museum from Creative Time — which commissions and presents public art projects — where she has served as the director of global initiatives since 2012.

Kara Walker’s sugar-covered sphinx drew more than 130,000 viewers during its two-month run at the Domino sugar factory, with an average attendance of 5,000 a day on the weekends it was open, according to Creative Time, the public-art organization that commissioned the work.

Attendance surged to 10,000 a day on Saturday and Sunday, the last two days that the artwork, titled “A Subtlety,” was on display.
