Visitors to the Menil Collection have a rare opportunity this fall to experience works from the museum’s Surrealist collection in dialogue with one of the movement’s major figures – Salvador Dalí. On loan from the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, the artist’s 1932 painting, Eggs on the Plate Without the Plate, greets viewers on a wall by itself as they enter the first of three galleries reinstalled for this special exhibition. Curated by Assistant Curator Clare Elliott and consisting of some 30 works by 12 artists, The Secret of the Hanging Egg: Salvador Dalí at the Menil opened on November 5, 2015 and will remain on view through June 19 of next year.

Arguably the two most influential 20th century Spanish artists, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, come together in this landmark exhibition at The Dali Museum in downtown St. Petersburg, FL. Organized by The Dali and the Museu Picasso, Barcelona with the collaboration of the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dali, “Picasso/Dali, Dali/Picasso” runs through February 16, 2015.

The exhibit features rarely loaned works from more than 20 international museums and collectors worldwide. There are over 90 works in the exhibit including a large assortment of paintings, as well as drawings, prints and sculpture plus archival documents such as postcards from Dali to Picasso. After its premier at The Dali, the exhibit will be on display at the Museu Picasso, Barcelona from March 19-June 28, 2015.

The Dali Museum debuted a sensational optical and intellectual experience delving into the world of double images and illusions. “Marvels of Illusion” opened to the public Saturday, June 14, 2014. Curated by Joan Kropf, the exhibit showcases a variety of Dalí paintings, prints and sculpture; a special work from the 16th Century from the School of Arcimboldo, on loan from the Ringling Museum; and rich explanatory material.

A centerpiece of the Marvels of Illusion exhibit is an interactive installation titled “Gala Contemplating You” which places visitors inside one of Dali’s most famous paintings. The installation is inspired by Dali’s 1976 painting “Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea Which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln (Homage to Rothko),” which proved that 121 pixels could identify a particular human face. A corresponding web application allows virtual visitors from around the globe to submit their photos and become part of the experience as well.
