The Art Institute of Chicago announced that Gloria Groom has been named the chair of the museum’s European Painting and Sculpture department. She will now oversee the museum’s collection of Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, early 19th-century, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist art.

Groom, who is also currently the Art Institute’s David and Mary Winton Green Curator, is known best for her work related to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and has written about the work of Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard.

Kimbell Art Museum curator and former National Gallery intern C.D. Dickerson has been named curator and head of sculpture and decorative arts at the National Gallery of Art, the museum announced Thursday.

Beginning July 27, Dickerson will oversee a collection of more than 3,500 works of European and American sculpture, decorative arts and medals. He succeeds Mary Levkoff, who left in July to become the director of Hearst Castle in California.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents Delacroix’s "Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi," featuring the monumental painting, on view for the first time in Los Angeles. Painted in 1826 by Eugène Delacroix, the leading French Romantic painter of the day, "Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi" is one of the most celebrated French paintings of the 19th century. The work is held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, France, and has seldom traveled.

“This exhibition is an extremely rare opportunity to showcase a masterwork by one of the 19th century’s most important painters,” said Leah Lehmbeck, curator of European Painting and Sculpture at LACMA. “The picture itself is profoundly rich with political, cultural, and artistic detail, and therefore speaks to a range of issues through its engaging dramatic context.”

The Speed Art Museum continues to add to its curatorial staff in preparation for re-opening in 2016. Erika Holmquist-Wall, a specialist in 19th and 20th century Nordic art and design, joins the museum next month as the Mary and Barry Bingham Sr. Curator of European and American Painting and Sculpture.

The Speed announced the hire of contemporary art curator Miranda Lash, formerly of the New Orleans Museum of Art, in July.
