Extraordinary work by glass luminary Dale Chihuly is shown at Museum of Glass through January 4, 2016. Creating a vibrant display, the exhibition features Chihuly’s own contemporary versions of Italian Art Deco Venetian sculptures.

Chihuly’s Venetians were developed from the inspiration he acquired while making a trip to Venice in 1988. During this trip, he visited a gallery that housed an extraordinary private collection of Venetian glass that represented the pinnacle of Venetian Art Deco. Returning to the U.S., he then decided to create his own versions of the classic pieces with his unique, lively twist.

Look closely at the Emily Brock sculpture in the new Nancy and David Wolf Collection gallery at the Cincinnati Art Museum.

The Wolfs, renowned contemporary craft collectors and art patrons, commissioned Brock, an artist from New Mexico, to make a miniature glass version of the great room in their Cincinnati home.

The National Gallery of Art has acquired works by three contemporary female artists and a Chicago outsider artist using funds from the museum’s Collectors Committee and other donors.

Cecily Brown’s painting “Girl on a Swing,” Martha Rosler’s photomontage “Cleaning the Drapes” and Roni Horn’s cast-glass sculpture “Opposite of White, v. 2” were added to the collection at the museum’s board meeting May 1.

Nearly a hundred examples of iconic Tiffany Studios works are forming the centerpiece of Sotheby’s sale of Tiffany and Prewar Design: The Warshawsky Collection in New York on May 19.

Led by the "Elaborate Peony" Lamp, circa 1910 (est. $600,000-$900,000), the variety of colorful glass works in mostly floral motifs is emblematic of the collection of noted Chicago businessman Roy Warshawsky and his wife Sarita, who assembled the works from the 1960s through the 1990s. There are also leaded glass lighting and windows, favrile glass, enamels, pottery, and bronze pieces produced by the firm founded by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

It’s hard to take in much Dale Chihuly artwork without a big helping of artist worship. The international glass artist has an internationally strong public relations crew, not to mention on-staff photographers, videographers, personal assistants and an entire team of glassblowers making sure that the Chihuly brand — like the art — is big and visible.

“Chihuly Drawings,” newly opened at Tacoma’s Museum of Glass, is no exception. A gallery has been devoted to the artist’s process, and another is papered floor to ceiling with his fax messages.

Two New York philanthropists are donating a major collection of more than 300 ancient Greco-Roman and Near-Eastern glass vessels to The Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

The gift from Robert and Renee Belfer was announced by the museum Wednesday. It comes as the institution celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. An exhibition titled “A Roman Villa — The Belfer Collection” showcasing approximately 100 of the objects will be on view at The Israel Museum from June 5 through Nov. 21.

The collection is “one of the most important private holdings of antiquities anywhere,” museum Director James Snyder said in a telephone interview from Jerusalem.

The Corning Museum of Glass has made five acquisitions of recent works by artists Roni Horn, Klaus Moje, Ayala Serfaty, Jeroen Verhoeven and Fred Wilson, expanding its collection contemporary art and design. The museum is due to put the works on display in its new $64 million wing, which is due to open March 20.

The museum in Corning, New York, is the world’s largest collection of glass objects, spanning 3,500 years.
