Joan Miró was a prolific graffiti artist who covered the walls of one studio with ideas for new works. These sketches “show how he thought”, says the Spanish artist’s grandson, Joan Punyet Miró, who is organising a show in London about his grandfather’s studio life in collaboration with the Galería Mayoral in Barcelona.

The Joan Mitchell Center just underwent a big renovation of its Treme campus, including upgrades to its historic buildings by Jonathan Tate and a modern new 8,000-square-foot studio building by Lee Ledbetter.

The big addition to the campus is the Ledbetter-designed studio space, a striking modern structure with spare, high-ceilinged studios. They are working to attain LEED certified building, which was built with rainwater management in mind.

ome 80 years after Pablo Picasso had settled in the upper levels of the Hôtel de Savoie, on 7 rue des Grands Augustins in Paris, the artist's Left Bank studio will be made accessible to the public again thanks to an initiative by his daughter, Maya Widmaier-Picasso.

It was here that Picasso created his dark masterpiece, Guernica, in 1936, at the start of the Spanish Civil War.

The home where Abstract Expressionist giant Willem de Kooning had his first East Hampton’s studio in the leafy hamlet of Springs back in 1961 has opened its doors as part of an artist-in-residence program. A community of skilled creative types will live and create on the estate.

But the retreat, which began its fledgling residency this past May, is not exactly what you might expect when you hear the name de Kooning. The newest artist-in-residence program is not a visual-artists’ residency like the ones at UCLA’s Hammer Museum, the Walker Art Center, or Artpace.

Any Andy Warhol fan with money to spare can bid on the official lease of Andy Warhol’s first New York City studio, outside of his own house on 159 East 87th street next week.

The lease, which over the years has seen some wear and tear, is up for auction at Sotheby’s inaugural New York Sale on April 1. It is estimated to sell for anywhere between $8,000 and $12,000.

Signed by Warhol, the document shows that he agreed to lease the obsolete fire house for $150 through the month of January in 1963.

Adrien Legendre, Assistant Vice President and Specialist of Books & Manuscript said the short lease suggests Warhol was most likely trying out the studio space for size.

In these days of post-studio, post-Internet artistry, of nomadic careers and collaborative cohorts, the artist’s studio can sometimes seem like a thing of the past, a relic from that bygone era before the supposed death of the author and the age of mechanical reproduction. But even if young artists work increasingly out of backpacks, on laptops or in tandem, alone time in a fairly private work space remains an essential condition for creativity.

To remind us of the history of the artist’s studio, its multiple roles as work space, refuge, stage, gallery and subject, the Gagosian Gallery has mounted not one but two museum-quality exhibitions, “In the Studio: Paintings” in its space on West 21st Street in Chelsea, and “In the Studio: Photographs” at its flagship gallery on the Upper East Side.

Henry Moore’s famous maquette studio will be recreated in a special exhibition curated by the Director of The Henry Moore Foundation, Richard Calvocoressi at Gagosian Gallery in Davies Street, London. Henry Moore: Wunderkammer – Origin of Forms, will run from February 9 –  April 2, 2015.
 
Henry Moore is best known for his large-scale sculptures that occupy public spaces across the world, however the starting-point for these works often came from small pieces of stone, shells, bones, animal skulls and other found objects that the artist collected and displayed in his studio at Perry Green, which is now home to The Henry Moore Foundation.

The cramped space in which the artist and poet William Blake produced some of the greatest prints in the history of art will be recreated for an exhibition next month at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

The house, the magnificently named 13 Hercules Buildings, in Lambeth, south London, was demolished in 1918. But the floor plans, made for a Victorian survey of the estate, were recently discovered in the Guildhall library by print-maker and guest curator Michael Phillips.

A significant collection of works, never before on the market, by Man Ray will be offered at Sotheby's, Paris on 15 November. This will be the very last opportunity to acquire works by Man Ray coming directly from the studio of the artist, the artist’s estate. Following the first sale of works by Man Ray, coming from the studio of the artist held at Sotheby’s London in 1995, the auction will be the largest and most important sale of works by the ground-breaking artist in nearly 20 years.

As observed by Andrew Strauss, Vice-president of Sotheby’s France and leading authority on Man Ray: “Today’s auction presents a selection of the remaining significant works from the artist’s estate, many of which have never been seen previously.

The New York Studio School’s Whitney Studio in Greenwich Village has been designated a “National Treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, according to an announcement from the organization today. The building was constructed in 1877 as a carriage house but was converted by art patron Getrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1907 into a studio and salon.

The Whitney Studio’s ornate interior was designed by Robert Winthrop Chanler, whom Whitney commissioned in 1918. Today, the structure and its decorative elements are badly in need of repair and restoration, with the New York Studio School estimating the cost of the project at $2.2 million.
