A Look at Art Basel Miami Beach’s Top Sales

"I wish I brought a lot more art," said New York art dealer Sean Kelly toward the end of the latest edition of Art Basel in Miami Beach. "We had a phenomenal fair."

Based on reports from dealers this weekend, the pace of both major and middle market sales continued at the same brisk pace that marked the VIP preview Wednesday, December 2 and continued on the following day.

This past summer the magazine ArtNews published a special issue on the status of female artists – and the statistics it presented affirmed that the art world still has a whole lot to improve. Less than 30% of the exhibitions at America’s leading museums go to women. The share of women in major group exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta, is far below parity.

Miami’s Pérez Art Museum Names New Director

The Pérez Art Museum has picked Franklin Sirmans as its next director. He brings to the table fund-raising success, experience in four major U.S. markets (Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, at MoMA PS1 and the Brooklyn Museum, and Houston), a curatorial focus on contemporary art—and even art journalism experience as the former U.S. editor of Flash Art and Editor-in-Chief of ArtAsiaPacific.

He may need that varied bag of tricks to draw focus to the Pérez Museum (in any month but December, when Art Basel Miami Beach descends on the city), to boost its profile and attendance within the crazily museum-rich town and to raise both operating funds and its good will with the locals.

Many of the world's finest artworks are owned and managed by corporations. However, these beautiful corporate art collections are seldom publicly accessible, kept behind heavy mahogany office doors, or in ironclad safes.

"Global Corporate Collections," a new 700 page publication by Deutsche Standard EDITIONEN, sheds light, for the first time, onto 80 corporate collections considered to be among the best in the world.

Following the exclusive project launch gala, which took place at Art Basel Miami Beach last December, AXA ART announced yesterday that "Global Corporate Collections" will finally be unveiled in its VIP Lounge at Art Basel in Basel, on June 17.

Art Basel’s 13th edition in Miami Beach closed Sunday, December 7, 2014, amidst strong praise from gallerists, private collectors, museum groups and the media. Highlights of the show included the introduction of the new Survey sector, which brought 13 art-historical projects to the fair, including many rare works never before exhibited in an art fair context; and Art Basel's staging with Performa of Ryan McNamara's "MEƎM 4 Miami: A Story Ballet About the Internet" at the Miami Grand Theater. Solid sales were reported across all levels of the market and throughout the run of the show. Featuring 267 leading international galleries from 31 countries, the show – whose Lead Partner is UBS – attracted an attendance of 73,000 over five days. Attendees included representatives of over 160 museum and institution groups from across the world – and a surging number of new private collectors from the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Following a 100 percent reapplication rate for the Galleries sector and with new galleries coming from across the world, the list of exhibitors was the strongest to date in Miami Beach, firmly solidifying the show's position as the leading international art fair of the Americas.

An unknown thief or group of thieves stole Pablo Picasso's "Visage aux Mains (Face with Hands)" (1956) from the Amsterdam-based Leslie Smith Gallery's booth at Art Miami, the "Miami Herald" reports. The work is a 16.5 inch in diameter silver plate and is believed to have been snatched sometime after 10:30pm on Thursday night. Police have classified the heist as grand theft.

Gallery owner David Smith discovered that the plate was missing from its holder upon arriving to Art Miami on Friday morning around 10:45am.

After numerous false starts, the City of Miami Beach is now proceeding apace with the renovation of its Convention Center, which has hosted Art Basel for more than a decade despite its dated design and creaking infrastructure. The $500 million renovation, which is being planned to start when Art Basel in Miami Beach 2015 closes and is due to be completed before the 2017 edition of the fair, replaces a previous, much more ambitious redevelopment scheme designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas.

Art Basel will continue to take place in the center, the oldest parts of which date from the late 1950s, throughout the revamp. “We are very confident that the refurbishment will be phased in a way that will enable us to continue operating to Art Basel standards,” says a spokeswoman for the fair.

As Art Basel in Miami Beach opened its doors today to an onslaught of press and VIPs, the news heard in the aisles was that veteran "New York Times" arts reporter Carol Vogel had resigned. Ms. Vogel has subsequently confirmed the news in an email to artnet News.

Here is Ms. Vogel's statement to artnet News:
As I'm sure you have probably read, the Times is offering voluntary buyouts and for those of us who have been here a while, it's a good deal. So after much soul-searching I have decided to take management up on the offer and resign. (I am joining quite a list of well-known bylines.)
