A collection of belongings from Hollywood legend Lauren Bacall’s Manhattan apartment sold for $3.6m (£2.45m) after a two-day auction at Bonhams in New York.

Bonhams said more than 1,500 bidders from 34 countries vied for the collection belonging to the Hollywood star, who died in August at age 89.

“We have been humbled by the worldwide outpouring of enthusiasm for this sale,” said Jon King, director and vice-president at Bonhams, as well as a friend of the actress. “Bacall’s legacy will live on in the homes of her countless admirers.”

Everything but the kitchen sink would be one way to describe the staggering array of possessions owned by Lauren Bacall that go under the hammer in New York next week.

From fine art to kitchenware, from avant garde to the kitsch: hundreds of items collected and loved by the Hollywood siren go on sale Tuesday and Wednesday at Bonhams auction house.

The collection is nothing if not eclectic. It includes jewelry and clothes, Aboriginal and African art, English and French furniture and items bought in antique shops around the world.

In addition to a  legacy of classic films from Hollywood’s heyday, when the iconic actress Lauren Bacall passed away in August 2014, she left behind a stunning and thoughtfully assembled art collection. A selection of these works will be offered at Bonhams in New York on March 31, 2015, and April 1, 2015. “The Lauren Bacall Collection,” which includes paintings, sculpture, furniture, jewelry, and tribal art, is expected to fetch approximately $3 million.

Prior to the sale in New York, highlights from Bacall’s collection will embark on an international tour, making stops at Bonhams’ locations in Hong Kong (January 14-19, 2015), Paris (January 29-February 3, 2015),  London (February 16-19, 2015), and Los Angeles (February 27-March 6, 2015). The works will also go on view at the Grand Palais in Paris (February 4-6, 2015) and Bonhams New York (March 25-30, 2015).

She was married to Humphrey Bogart. Shot films with the likes of John Wayne and Paul Newman. And over her long career racked up a pair of Tony Awards and an honorary Oscar. But if there was one figure who made screen legend Lauren Bacall weak in the knees it was British sculptor Henry Moore. 

Bacall, who passed away in August, was a longtime art collector, who amassed hundreds of artworks. Her tastes were broad and wide-ranging and her collection included African art and Pablo Picasso. But the actress had special affinity for works by Moore, whom she began collecting in the 1950s and first met in person in the mid-1970s.
