The High Museum of Art has announced that Katherine Jentleson will become its curator of folk and self-taught art. The position, which has gone unfilled for nearly two years, was endowed last summer through a $2.5 million gift from Atlanta patrons Dan Boone and his late wife Merrie Boone.

Jentleson, a Ph.D. candidate in art history at Duke University and the 2014-15 Douglass Foundation Predoctoral Fellow in American Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, will start at the High in September, She has worked at New York’s American Folk Art Museum and curated or assisted in organizing exhibits at Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art in Durham, N.C.

A family with extensive ties to Duke University has committed $3 million to Duke in support of athletics and the Nasher Museum of Art, President Richard H. Brodhead announced Tuesday.

Gary L. Wilson, a former Duke trustee, and his son, Derek, who serves on the Nasher’s board of advisors, are providing $2 million to enhance and support athletic facilities and $1 million to fund an endowment for the museum and its collection.

An exhibition featuring more than 50 masterpieces by Spanish-born artist Joan Miró opened Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.

The Nasher Museum is the only East Coast venue for “Miró: The Experience of Seeing,” a presentation of the final 20 years of Miró’s career. The exhibition includes 27 sculptures, 18 paintings and six drawings, some of them more than 6 feet tall. All works are on loan from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain. The exhibition is on view at the Nasher Museum through Feb. 22, 2015.

The National Academy Museum and School has let go several members of its staff, including both its registrars, the marketing director, the building manager and senior curator Bruce Weber. Dr. Marshall Price, the museum’s contemporary curator, left on his own volition in March to become a curator at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the National Academy’s director, Carmine Branagan, told the museum’s board that the reason the employees were let go was financial, but the real reason stems from disagreements within the institution over its future direction—namely, the promotion of Maurizio Pellegrin, a member of the school’s faculty, to the powerful position of creative director of both the National Academy School and its museum, which are located in a townhouse on Museum Mile.
