A bouquet of wildflowers painted by Vincent van Gogh weeks before his death is going on the auction block in New York City. Sotheby's says "Still Life, Vase With Daisies and Poppies" could sell for $30 million to $50 million Nov. 4.

Van Gogh painted it at the home of his physician, Dr. Paul Gachet, in 1890. It's one of the few works he sold during his lifetime.

New Musical will Celebrate the Life of Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh, one of the world's most renowned artists, will be celebrated on stage in a musical next year.

Vincent will open in autumn 2015 in Amsterdam, headlining the 125 Years of Inspiration event. Casting for the role of Van Gogh (1853-1890) is ongoing, and Dutch producer Albert Verlinde will oversee proceedings.

Martine Willekens, spokeswoman for the Van Gogh Europe Foundation, said the aim of the musical is to "bring Vincent van Gogh's works to life in a non-traditional way."

Few people have ever visited Oak Spring Farms, the grand home here of Rachel Lambert Mellon, better known as Bunny. If they had, they would have seen a Pissarro, unframed like a flea market find, above the living room fireplace. Upstairs, a still life by van Gogh hung above her bathtub. Antique porcelains — cabbages, asparagus, artichokes — were artfully arranged on practically every surface.

Mrs. Mellon was the matriarch of an American dynasty whose fortune and art holdings rivaled that of the Fricks, Carnegies and Morgans. But perhaps most notably, she was a passionate collector of a bygone era. She didn’t pay attention to what was in fashion; she didn’t think about future financial returns.

Vincent van Gogh’s (1853-1890) cheerful painting Bridge across the Seine at Asnières (1887), is now on view in the European Gallery of the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH. In the Modern Gallery, two stunning 20th century sculptures, Alberto Giacometti’s Annette IV (1962) and Henri Laurens’ Petite Cariatide(1930) will be on view starting September 24. These works of art are on loan to the Currier through December 2014.

“We are delighted to share these three important works of art by major artists of the late nineteenth and twentieth century with people throughout New England and beyond.” said Susan Strickler, director and CEO of the Currier. “In particular, this van Gogh has not been exhibited in America since 1970, so this is a rare opportunity to see this lively painting.”

San Antonio’s international flavor takes on a distinctly French accent this fall when the McNay Art Museum hosts "Intimate Impressionism" from the National Gallery of Art, an extensive exhibition of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings on its first-ever worldwide tour. The exhibition, on view at the McNay September 3, 2014 – January 4, 2015, is comprised of nearly 70 paintings, including work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh.

The collection features a selection of intimately scaled still lifes, portraits, and landscapes that are among the most beloved paintings at the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition is visiting Rome, Tokyo, San Francisco, Seattle, and San Antonio, making the McNay the only opportunity to see the collection in the United States outside of the West Coast.

The Van Gogh Museum has is received its millionth visitor for 2014. The lucky visitor, Mrs. van Waveren from Zwaag, received a bouquet of sunflowers an a voucher for ten gallons of decorative paint after entering the museum. 

As compared with recent years, more attendees are stopping by the Amsterdam museum, which is expecting the rate of visitors to keep rising. Last year saw a total of 1.4 million people pass through the museum’s doors.

Even an art novice would recognize the names of such masters as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.

This summer, they’ll get a chance to see some of the best works of art of these masters and more assembled in one exhibit at Buffalo’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

"Sincerely Yours: Treasures of the Queen City" opens Saturday with a free community event and runs through mid-September. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to see 70 master works from such famed painters as van Gogh, Picasso and Warhol along with Giacomo Balla, Salvador Dali, Paul Gauguin, Frida Kahlo, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko - all of them part of the Albright-Knox permanent collection.

From quick sketches to watercolors and finished masterpieces, works by artists such as Eugène Delacroix, Jacques-Louis David, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Egon Schiele, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso are brought together in Mind’s Eye: Masterworks on Paper from David to Cézanne (on view through October 26, 2014). Organized by the Dallas Museum of Art, the exhibition features more than 120 works on paper—many of which have never been exhibited publicly—by 70 artists. Drawn in part from the DMA’s collection, but with significant loans from private collections in North Texas, Mind’s Eye, offers new insights into the working methods and practices of these artists, providing an intimate view of their approach to art making while also presenting the drawings and watercolors as finished works of art in their own right.

“One of the goals of the Dallas Museum of Art is to encourage collecting within the community. There is no better example of how to do this than to highlight the Museum’s graphic holdings together with those that have been assembled in private homes throughout our area,” said Maxwell L. Anderson, The Eugene McDermott Director of the DMA. “Mind’s Eye: Masterworks on Paper from David to Cézanne presents a rich and fascinating array of works in various media by artists from the Austro-Hungarian, Belgian, British, Dutch, French, German, Spanish and Swiss schools, spanning nearly 150 years—from the French Revolution to the dawn of modernism.”

In fall 2015, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts will present “Eugène Delacroix and Modernity,” the first major exhibition to explore the legacy of the celebrated French painter, an influential trailblazer and one of the first modern masters of the form. The exhibition takes Cézanne’s observation that “we all paint in Delacroix’s language” as its starting point to reveal how Delacroix revolutionized French painting for the next generation of artists, leaving an indelible mark on Matisse, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Renoir, Degas, Monet, and others. The MIA is partnering with the National Gallery, London, for this unprecedented survey, featuring important works from the museums’ collections as well as rarely seen works from private collections. The exhibition opens at the MIA on October 18, 2015, and runs through January 10, 2016. It is on view at the National Gallery, London, February 10 through May 15, 2016.

By the time of his death, Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was one of the most revered artists in Paris and a hero of the avant-garde. By challenging the status quo by pushing the boundaries of the “Grand Style” of painting into the realm of modernism, he paved the way for younger artists. His large-scale paintings were the first to use the expressive, improvisational markmaking of the Impressionists, the dreamlike allusion of the Symbolists, and the bold colors of Morocco made famous 80 years later by Renoir and Matisse.

The National Gallery of Victoria has taken off display its “yes-no” van Gogh portrait and agreed that despite it having been in Victoria’s collection for 74 years, it rightfully belongs to two unnamed South African sisters, heirs to an estate dispersed under duress during the rise of Hitler.

In what amounts to the first successful Nazi restitution claim on an artwork in an Australian public collection, NGV’s trustees agree Head of a Man was owned by the late Jewish industrialist Richard Semmel until 1933 when he sold it under duress at auction in Amsterdam.
