Serge Lasvignes, a high-level French government official, was nominated this week to head the Pompidou Center, in a surprise choice to replace Alain Seban.

Mr. Seban’s term of service is ending after eight years in which he drove the expansion of the Paris museum, which houses one of the largest collections of modern art in Europe.

The succession — the topic of rumors for weeks — must still be approved by a government council, which will weigh the appointment of Mr. Lasvignes, 61, whose hiring was unexpected because of his low profile in the art world. (When Mr. Seban was hired in 2007, he had no museum management experience.)

During the inauguration of the Centre Pompidou’s new Photo Gallery, the museum’s president, Alain Seban, announced plans for an exhibition space dedicated to architecture and design. The new gallery will be located within the Centre Pompidou’s existing building in Paris’ lively Beaubourg neighborhood. According to “The Art Newspaper,” Seban said that he plans “to create, as soon as possible, a gallery of architecture and design by reclaiming spaces closed to the public.”

The new Photo Gallery, which is housed in former technical facilities at the Centre Pompidou, opened to the public on Wednesday, November 5. Stretching over 200 square meters, the gallery allows the museum to display a larger portion of its vast photography collection, which includes 40,000 prints and over 60,000 negatives.

It took over 20 years to materialize, but the Centre George Pompidou in Paris will finally get a permanent gallery dedicated to photography. The new space will be inaugurated next October, the Centre’s president Alain Seban told the Journal des Arts.
