Germany's federal parliament, the Bundestag, has granted Munich's Haus der Kunst €20 million ($21.4 million) in funding towards the historic building's upcoming renovation, the Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts has announced in a joint statement with the museum.

The federal government money brings the total public funding to €78 million ($83.7 million), after the Bavarian government already pledged €58 million ($62.2 million) to the crucial modernization work in 2012.

The fashion industry stepped in once again to help fund ailing Italian museums. This time, Florence-based Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo made major donations, reinforcing their commitment to Italian arts and culture.

On Monday night, the Uffizi Gallery re-opened eight rooms following extensive renovations funded by a €600,000 ($678,702) donation from Ferragamo, WWD reported.

The Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., has been awarded a $10,000 Arts Engagement in American Communities grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support public programming for its fall exhibition, “California Impressionism: Selections from the Irvine Collection.”

The NEA is the federal agency that supports and funds the arts to give all Americans the opportunity to experience creativity and to participate in the arts. NEA programs and funding support thousands of activities in communities large and small across the country, including about 30,000 performances and 3,000 exhibitions annually.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts announces that it will be the recipient of a $300,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections (SCHC) Implementation Grant will be in the amount of $250,000 outright, with an additional $50,000 in matching funds.

The SCHC grant will support PAFA's construction of a collections storage expansion project on the fifth floor of its Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building. This project will provide a brand new space for the storage and care of the museum's immense Works on Paper and Archives Collections. Construction will begin in late 2015.

Greece’s debt crisis is not limited to its banks. In fact, its reach extends to the nation’s publicly-funded museums, according to a recent article in The Art Newspaper. After seven years of austerity policies and recent heightened economic uncertainty following the public’s rejection of bailout proposals, Greek art professionals are reporting that museums are running out of money to stay in operation.

“The first things to suffer under the government’s austerity plan have been culture, education, and health,” Denys Zacaropoulos, artistic director of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, told The Art Newspaper

Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg’s philanthropic organisation has named four US cities to receive up to $1m to fund temporary public art projects.

Bloomberg Philanthropies first Public Art Challenge Grant asked cities with a population of more than 30,000 to submit proposals for projects that involve artists, arts organisations and the local government while also addressing civic issues.

The Tate will receive an extra £6m from the government to help fund the cost of running Tate Modern, we have learned. The agreement, which has not been formally announced, was made ahead of the General Election, which saw the Conservative Party win a slim majority.

The promise of extra money for the Tate is a remarkable achievement by the Tate’s director, Nicholas Serota, who 15 years ago secured an extra £5m from the then Labour government so that Tate Modern could open without charging for admission.

The Dallas Museum of Art announced today the receipt of a $3 million grant from the Eagle Family to fund the renovation of the museum’s north entrance, which faces Klyde Warren Park.

Paired with an additional $1.3 million from the Hamon Charitable Foundation, the plans will transform the area outside of the museum’s Atrium Cafe into a plaza with outdoor seating for the restaurant. In addition, the driveways allowing access to the museum’s underground parking garage will be reconfigured, making room for wider sidewalks and new landscaping that are intended to create improved pedestrian access and flow between the park and the front of the DMA. 

The MIT Center for Art, Science and Technology (CAST) has received $1.5 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, in support of the center’s role as a catalyst for multidisciplinary creative experimentation and integration of the arts across all areas of MIT. The recent grant brings the Mellon Foundation’s total support for CAST to $3 million, among the largest gifts received by the Arts at MIT.

Philip S. Khoury, associate provost, expressed gratitude for the Mellon Foundation’s ongoing support and recognition: “The Mellon Foundation has an unparalleled role in funding pioneering programs in the arts and humanities, and this gift is a wonderful affirmation of the role of the Arts at MIT, CAST’s mission, and of the Institute’s distinctive arts heritage. We are enormously grateful for the Mellon’s ongoing support, which will enable us to expand the vital work of the Center.”

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York has appointed Leah Dickerman as the first Marlene Hess Curator of Painting and Sculpture. The position was recently established by Marlene Hess, a philanthropic consultant and a Museum Trustee since 2002. Hess’ endowment will provide essential funding to support MoMA’s current and future curatorial goals.

According to a press release from the museum, MoMA’s Director, Glen D. Lowry, said, “The Museum of Modern Art is grateful for this important endowment from our generous and longtime trustee Marlene Hess. Marlene's commitment to the Museum's curatorial and intellectual development is exemplary and her support helps us realize our goals for the future."
