Another $150,000 in federal funding has been procured for a New York historic site where previously unknown wall paintings by a famous 19th-century artist have been uncovered.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer announced this week that the Institute of Museum and Library Services has approved the additional grant for the home of Hudson River School artist Thomas Cole.

President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Hermann Parzinger, has announced that Berlin's Museum of Modern Art will open no later than 2021. Speaking to the DPA, he said, "It is an ambitious goal, but I am optimistic that we can make it." Most important in reaching that goal, he suggested, was a higher level of unity among the political and cultural partners behind the project who have, at times, found themselves at odds.

In November, the project's biggest hurdle was cleared when the federal government approved a €200 million appropriation to fund the construction of the new museum (see €200 Million Appropriation Clears Way for Berlin MoMA).

Tate has acquired 100 works as an addition to their collection thanks to The Outset /Frieze Art Fair Fund to benefit the Tate Collection. The selection panel includes Agustín Pérez Rubio (Artistic Director, MALBA, Buenos Aires) and Laurence Rassel (Director, Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona) and also Frances Morris (Head of Collections, International Art, Tate), Ann Gallagher (Head of Collections, British Art, Tate), Tanya Barson (Curator, International Art, Tate) and Clarrie Wallis (Curator, Contemporary British Art, Tate). The fund is organized and financed by Outset and in 2014 enjoys continued support from Leviev Extraordinary Diamonds. The annual fund at Frieze London, allows Tate to acquire important works of art at the fair for the national collection. This year the Fund is set at £150,000.

Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate said of the fund: “For more than a decade, the Outset Contemporary Art Fund has played a major role in helping Tate to build the national collection of contemporary art for the benefit of audiences across the country and in London. We are immensely grateful to Outset for this support."

The American Folk Art Museum in New York received a $1.6 million grant from the Henry Luce Foundation that will help fund a major traveling exhibition of works from its collection. Since moving to a smaller location in 2011, the Folk Art Museum has only been able to display a portion of its collection. The traveling exhibition will allow for a more comprehensive experience.  

The Henry Luce Foundation grant will enable Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum to visit 5 American cities over the course of 3 years. It will go on view at the American Folk Art Museum from May 13-August 17, 2014 before embarking on its journey. The show will feature over 100 works including quilts, paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Henry R. Luce, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc., established the Luce Foundation in 1936. One of the Foundation’s missions is to strengthen international understanding and foster innovation in a variety of arenas including the arts. Since its founding, the Luce Foundation has given grants totaling over $145 million to approximately 250 institutions through its American Art Program.

On Wednesday, March 13, 2013 Norwegian officials announced that the country’s government would help fund a new museum devoted to the influential painter and printmaker Edvard Munch (1863-1944). The new institution will replace the current Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway, which was built after World War II in a notoriously rundown neighborhood. Many believe that the shoddily constructed museum does not do justice to Munch, his art or his legacy.

The city council has been discussing the creation of a new museum since 2008 but plans were stymied by disagreements over cost, location, and architecture. After years of disputes and little progress, the Norwegian state decided to step in by offering to help fund the $278 million project as well as assist with project management. State officials are asking Oslo’s city council to make a formal request for the support, which would hopefully lift the museum out of its dismal financial situation.

Upon his death in 1944, Munch bequeathed a large portion of his collection to the city of Oslo including two versions of his seminal painting The Scream. While many people hope that the government’s offer will help move the museum project along, others are not as optimistic. Carl Ivar Hagen, a member of the city council, doesn’t expect the matter to be resolved anytime soon. Hagen believes that even with the state’s assistance disputes over the new museum’s location will continue to halt progress.
