Mystic, Conn. ~ The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport will host its annual spring exhibition and sale, Modern Marine Masters, May 1 through June 12.

The invitational exhibition showcases the work of over 70 of the most-talented marine artists working today. The 85 pieces are a variety of media, including oils, watercolors, acrylics, ink, graphite, and scrimshaw.

This year's show is notable for its range of exquisite paintings inspired by marine subjects from yesterday and today that celebrate our nautical heritage from historical tall ships under sail, to classic racing yachts, to everyday working boats and scenes of coastal waters and marshes.

“Modern Marine Masters is one of our most popular exhibitions,” said Jeanne Potter, director of the Maritime Gallery. “Each distinguished artist selected for the exhibit is a leading master of contemporary marine art and the pieces truly capture the timeless beauty of the sea.”

David Bareford, F. ASMA, one of the Maritime Gallery's most distinguished artists for over 20 years, will exhibit his exceptional painting, "America's Cup Jubilee Regatta, August 21, 2001." Bareford said, "One of the most exciting events that I have ever attended was the week-long celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the first America's Cup race.”

This sesquicentennial race was reenacted as a huge fleet of vessels retraced the original course by sailing clockwise around the Isle of Wight, an island situated to the south of England's southernmost coast. The Schooner America was the first to win the Royal Yacht Squadron's One Hundred Guinea Cup in the inaugural race in 1851. Hence the name of the race: The America's Cup.

Visitors are invited to view the exhibit daily, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the Maritime Gallery is free.
