When Fredric Brandt, the plastic surgeon to the stars, took his own life earlier this year, he left behind a trove of artworks that might have surprised those who thought his tastes were purely cosmetic. His collection, scattered between his homes in New York and Miami, includes works by Wool, Baldessari, Stingel, and Oehlen, and when it came time to find an auction house for the estate, Phillips emerged victorious after a fairly competitive jostle. It began readying the sale of 200 works, valued at $15 million in total, and 18 of these works went on sale tonight, at the house’s contemporary art evening sale in London.

The contemporary art market experienced a record-breaking year in 2013/14, smashing through the $2 billion mark for the first time, according to new figures released on Tuesday.

US artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, who died in 1988, Jeff Koons and Christopher Wool remain the market's biggest stars accounting for sales at auction of 339 million euros ($436 million), according to Artprice, a Paris-based organization which keeps the world's biggest database on the contemporary art market.

In the year from July 2013, sales of contemporary art at public auctions reached $2.046 billion dollars, up 40 percent on the previous year, Artprice's annual report said.

Chicago Gets Temporary Sculpture Installation

The city is in the process of installing eight temporary sculptures, most at locations up and down the lakefront, according to Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office.

While the mayor's office announced the installations "are coming to neighborhoods across Chicago," seven of the eight are going up near the lake.

Three sculptures have been installed, according to officials: 'Untitled, 2013' by Christopher Wool, at Buckingham Plaza North; 'Nature’s Clock' by Robert Lobe, at the intersection of McFetridge and Museum drives on the Museum Campus; and Lobe's 'Eastern Hophornbeam,' at Diversey Harbor.
