This past summer the magazine ArtNews published a special issue on the status of female artists – and the statistics it presented affirmed that the art world still has a whole lot to improve. Less than 30% of the exhibitions at America’s leading museums go to women. The share of women in major group exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and Documenta, is far below parity.

San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum's new exhibit "28 Chinese" showcases the fruits of Don and Mera Rubell’s labors, which began 51 years ago when they got married, and started collecting art.

The exhibit of 48 works by 28 Chinese artists ages 30 to 60 from the Rubell Family Collection of Miami also reflects Asian Art Museum Director Jay Xu's extensive plan to explore and showcase Asia's contemporary art.

The world’s largest museum devoted to contemporary art from Africa is under construction in Cape Town. The $50 million Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) will be housed in a disused, colonial-era industrial structure consisting of 42 towering, nine-story-tall grain silos on the waterfront in Cape Town.

“It has been my life dream to build a contemporary art museum in Africa,” Mark Coetzee, the former director of Miami’s Rubell Family Collection and executive director and chief curator of Zeitz MOCAA, told the AFP.
