Thirteen museums in seven countries have been named recipients of Bank of America grants for the conservation of artworks ranging from an Edouard Manet painting to a colossal ancient Chinese Buddha.

The 2015 Art Conservation Project grants totaling more than $1 million were announced Friday. The recipients include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the British Museum, the OCA Museum in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar.

Protestors shut down New York's Guggenheim Museum in protest over what they call the museum's inaction in ensuring decent conditions for workers in Abu Dhabi, where the museum is planning to open a new museum, according to reports at Artinfo, which broke the news, and the "New York Times."

In 2010, New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum embarked on a six-year project with the luxury automobile brand BMW. The BMW Guggenheim Lab was to include three 5,000 square feet pop-up structures that would travel in consecutive cycles to one location in the U.S., one in Europe and another in Asia. The architect-designed pieces were to remain in each location for 3 months, accompanied by Guggenheim curators who would helm programs for leaders in the fields of architecture, art, science, design, technology and education in an effort to curb issues relating to urban living.

The project’s first lab opened in Manhattan’s East Village in 2011 and attracted over 54,000 visitors. The project transformed a gritty, empty lot into a handsome community center designed by the Tokyo-based architecture firm, Atelier Bow-Wow. The Lab, which was the first and last for the project, traveled to Berlin and Mumbai following its stint in NYC.

BMW officials assured the public that the company will continue to be a global partner of the Guggenheim and that they are still considering future collaborations. The lab project, which was slated to last through 2016, was supposedly reconsidered due to “strategic shifts within the company” at BMW. The exhibition Participatory City: 100 Urban Trends from the BMW Guggenheim Lab will prematurely wrap up the project. The show will be presented at the Guggenheim Museum in New York from October 11, 2013 through January 5, 2014.

Now’s the Time: Recent Acquisitions brings together highlights from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s ever-growing collection of contemporary art. Ending on January 2, 2013, the exhibition features works that have been acquired by the institution over the past five years and illustrates how painting, sculpture, and photography have evolved since the 1970s. While spotlighting the museum’s newest holdings, Now’s the Time also shows how the institution’s acquisitions have grown more inclusive in recent years and features works from a wide variety of artists and explores a range of ideas and perspectives.

The exhibition features works from both established and emerging artists including Ai Weiwei (b. 1957), William Cordova (b. 1971), Anish Kapoor (b. 1954), Barbara Kruger (b. 1945), and Lyle Ashton Harris (b. 1965).
