New York’s Gagosian Gallery is currently presenting an exhibition of sculptures and works on paper by the late American artist Walter De Maria. A pioneer of conceptual art, installation art, land art, and Minimalism, De Maria continuously pushed the boundaries of what contemporary art looked like and how it was displayed.

Last month, Gagosian Gallery announced that it had acquired De Maria’s estate and planned to establish the Walter De Maria Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to managing the artist’s rights and reproductions, advising on curatorial matters, and overseeing the preparation of a major monograph. Elizabeth Childress, former director of the De Maria studio, and current director of the Walter De Maria Collection and Archives, said, “Walter so wished to establish his own foundation, but sadly he did not accomplish this during his lifetime. It is an important step to have this entity as both a protection and a promotion of his legacy.”       

American installation artist Robert Irwin will create a major piece for the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, the foundation announced on Thursday.

The project has been in the works for 13 years, Irwin said.

"I'm not going to count my chickens before they hatch," he joked. "I'll believe it when I see it."

He'll have to wait a couple of years until then. Construction on the installation will begin next year and isn't slated to be completed until 2016.

The legendary art dealer Marian Goodman will open a London outpost this fall. Located in an 11,000-square-foot Victorian warehouse on Golden Square in Soho, the Marian Goodman Gallery will join a number of U.S.-based galleries in the neighborhood, including Gagosian Gallery, David Zwirner Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, and Pace Gallery. Goodman, who has well-established galleries in New York and Paris, represents a bevvy of influential artists, including conceptual artists John Baldessari, Dan Graham, and Lawrence Weiner; photographers Jeff Wall, Rineke Dijkstra, and Thomas Struth; installation artists Annette Messager and Danh Vō; and painters Julie Mehretu and Gerhard Richter.

The London-based architect David Adjaye has helmed the renovation of the gallery space. Adjaye, who designed Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum for African American History and Culture, which is currently under construction, is known for his ingenious use of materials and his ability to showcase light.

On Saturday, August 2, New York’s Summer Streets program, a project organized by the New York City Department of Transportation, kicked off in Manhattan. The event, which will take place again on August 9 and on August 16, creates a pedestrian alley down Park Avenue and Lafayette Street, opening up nearly 7 miles of city thoroughfares so that people can play, run, walk, and bike. While the roster of activities includes everything from musical performances to yoga classes, art plays a major part in the program.

This year, Summer Streets features an installation by contemporary Norwegian sound artist Jana Winderen. “Dive” is a seven-block-long art installation in the Park Avenue Tunnel that was commissioned by New York City DOT Art.
