The Institute of Contemporary Art set its groundbreaking date for Nov. 16, putting the project behind its previously estimated completion, which coincided with Art Basel 2016.

The 37,000-square-foot, three-story building, including a 15,000-square-foot sculpture garden, will sit on 41st street in the Design District on land donated by Miami Design District Associates.

ICA Miami Appoints Its First Permanent Director

A year after establishing itself as Miami’s newest arts venue, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami has chosen a permanent director.

Ellen Salpeter, a longtime arts institution leader in New York who has served as deputy director of external affairs for the Jewish Museum in New York since 2012, will start her new position at ICA Miami on Dec. 1.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has gifted $5 million to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, to support the development and presentation of exhibitions of contemporary art.

“Thanks to [the] Knight Foundation's visionary support we will be able to expand our ability to commission experimental and scholarly exhibitions by the most significant emerging and under-represented artists of our time,” said Alex Gartenfeld, ICA Miami’s deputy director and chief curator.

ICA Miami Announces Inaugural Exhibition Schedule

Last week the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) announced that Suzanne Weaver would be its interim director and Alex Gartenfeld would take on the role of deputy director and chief curator. Now the fledgling museum has announced that its inaugural exhibitions will feature artists Pedro Reyes and Andra Ursuta. The shows will be up from December 3 through March 2015 and be completely free to the public. Expect an opening party for the Miami Basel crowd on December 2.

The ICA Miami is temporarily located in the Miami Design District’s Moore Building while the Board of Trustees continue to search for a permanent home.

ICA Miami Names New Interim Director

With a new building and a new name already under its belt, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) has just announced a new interim director. Suzanne Weaver will take on the interim role while Alex Gartenfeld will transition to deputy director and chief curator. The Board of Trustees and former staff of the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, officially broke with the city of North Miami in August to move to temporary digs in Miami’s Design District.

Weaver has logged 20 years in the museum world at institutions across the country, including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Speed Art Museum.
