In conjunction with Stenton’s exhibition, LOGANIA: Stenton Collections Reassembled, Stenton has brought together known Logan family Queen Anne chairs and comparable examples from public and private collections. This lecture and workshop will provide a close study of chairs that may appear the same or very similar on the outside, but are structurally different on the inside. Why these differences? Where did they come from? What do they tell us about chair making in Colonial Philadelphia? Join us at Stenton on Friday April 17th for this special workshop exploring Queen Anne chairs and their construction. Workshop will be led by Laura Keim, Stenton’s Curator, and Philip Zimmerman, Scholar and Decorative Arts Consultant. Tickets are Required.

As the first phase of the Eames House Conservation Project draws to a close, join Kyle Normandin, associate principal with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates and former GCI project manager; Lucia Dewey Atwood, director of the Eames Foundation's 250 Year Project; and Frank Escher of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, project architects for the phase one work, as they illuminate the critical role that science and investigation play in conservation.

They will discuss studies and conservation work completed at the Eames House to date—including analysis and treatment on tallowwood paneling, initial repairs to the building envelope, paint analysis, and investigation and replacement of the vinyl tile floor covering—as well as plans for the next phase of the project. Susan Macdonald, head of Field Projects at the GCI, will moderate the discussion.

 On Monday, January 26, 2015 at 5PM, Jay Robert Stiefel, a lawyer and well-known collector and historian of American decorative arts, will give a lecture entitled “Leather Apron Men: Benjamin Franklin & Philadelphia’s Artisans” at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The event is free and open to the public.

The illustrated talk will center on Benjamin Franklin’s work as an artisan as well as his role in fostering the public appreciation of his fellow craftsmen. America’s foremost founding fathers and the country’s first printing magnate, Franklin tended toward self-deprecation, writing in a 1740 issue of his “Pennsylvania Gazette” that he was no more than “a poor ordinary mechanick of this City.”

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla is planning to expand its museum space to make room for more art.

The museum’s current building is big enough to exhibit 50 to 75 works of art. Close to 4,000 pieces in its permanent collection sit in storage vaults. The proposed expansion would triple the exhibition space to 30,000 square feet.

The firm chosen to design the expansion, Selldorf Architects, is led by German-born, New York resident Annabelle Selldorf, who was in town this week to meet with museum staff and give a lecture about her work.

American, European and foreign furniture, paintings, fine and decorative arts of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries will be presented in room settings by a distinguished roster of dealers including Tucker Frey, George Subkoff, C.M. Leonard and Barbara Evans, Shaia Oriental Rugs of Williamsburg, VA, Hanes & Ruskin, Saje Americana Antiques, Zane Moss, J. Gallagher, Ed Weissman, Paul and Karen M. Wendhiser, Blue Heron Fine Art, Dona Kemetz, Joseph Chung, Vintage Poster Art, Fritz Rohn and Leonce Antiques among others.

Furthermore the show will be dedicated to one time Westport, CT residents F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald with a lecture scheduled for Sunday, October 27 dealing with the Fitzgeralds' days in Westport. The free lecture will be conducted by show promoter Jay St. Mark, ph.D. A full bar, hors d'oeuvres and restaurant will be available throughout the show's run. Admission is $10 with a discount for show cards and advertisements. Children under 12 are free as is parking.

Verbal appraisals will be available to the public at a cost of $10 per item (no firearms) from 1PM to 5PM Saturday, October 26 and 1PM to 5PM Sunday, October 27.

The Montclair Art Museum in Montclair, NJ will celebrate its 100^th anniversary on January 15, 2014. Beginning this fall and continuing throughout the following year, the museum will hold a variety of celebratory events and activities. In addition, the Montclair Museum will install the first in what it hopes to be a series of commissioned works for the institution’s outdoor sculpture garden. The sculptor Jean Shin will create works for this year’s installation.

Highlights from the upcoming centennial celebration include 100 Year, 100 Voices, a crowdsourced audio-tour project that invites members of the Montclair community to comment on their favorite work in the upcoming exhibition 100 Works for 100 Years; a lecture by University of San Francisco professor and author of Riches, Rivals and Radicals: 100 Years of the Museum in America, Marjorie Schwarzer; and Robert Smithson’s New Jersey, an exhibition highlighting the monumental works of New Jersey native and one of the founders of the Land Art movement, Robert Smithson.

The Montclair Art Museum is devoted to American art and Native American art forms. Its collection consists of over 12,000 works and includes paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and sculpture dating from the 18^th century to the present. The museum has the only gallery in the world dedicated solely to the work of the 19^th century American painter George Inness, who lived and worked in Montclair.
