International powerhouse gallery Hauser & Wirth has filed papers for a new home in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, four blocks north of its current location on 18th Street, which it has occupied since January 2013.

The gallery put in a permit application with the city Tuesday to knock down the two-story white building on 542 West 22 Street.

Another veteran of the McKee, Philip Guston, joined in 1974, when his shift from Abstract Expressionist to figurative canvases, filled with bean-shaped heads, rogue limbs and light bulbs, was controversial. David and Renée McKee helped steer a reappraisal of Guston’s late work — now revered by artists and critics — after his death in 1980.

News of the gallery’s closing brought out a rush of suitors courting the Guston estate, which has just selected Hauser & Wirth to handle its representation worldwide.

Iwan Wirth, President and co-founder of the internationally acclaimed modern and contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth, announced that the company will build a permanent home in New York City’s west Chelsea arts district. One of the most sought-after locations in New York, Chelsea is brimming with top-notch galleries, including David Zwirner Gallery, Paul Kasmin Gallery, Andrea Rosen Gallery, Marianne Boesky Gallery, and Lehmann Maupin. This new venue will replace Hauser & Wirth’s current temporary downtown gallery, which will continue to host exhibitions and various programs until its lease expires in 2017. The 7,400-square-foot, multi-level space will complement Hauser & Wirth’s townhouse on East 69th Street.

The new Hauser & Wirth  gallery will be designed by Annabelle Selldorf of Selldorf Architects, who has worked with the gallery since the 1990s on its various locations in Zurich, London, and New York.

The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts will be represented exclusively by the international gallery Hauser & Wirth, the organizations announced Thursday.

The foundation, established by Kelley in 2007, issues grants for challenging and novel projects in Kelley's favored mediums, which included textiles, drawing, painting, video, photography, sculpture, installation and performance.

When Kelley died of an apparent suicide in South Pasadena in 2012, the foundation took on the role of shepherding his legacy. Hauser & Wirth said it will seek to reinforce Kelley's stature as one of Los Angeles' most influential artists, expand the foundation's programs and exhibit Kelley's work at its galleries worldwide.

Frieze Week, a seven-day concentration of art events, is currently underway in London. Between auctions, selling exhibitions, and a swath of fairs, approximately $2.2 billion worth of art will be up for grabs.

The epicenter of the event, the Frieze Art Fair, will open to VIP guests on Tuesday, October 14. Now in its twelfth year, the fair will present contemporary offerings from 162 international dealers, including Gagosian Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Casey Kaplan, Lehmann Maupin, Pace Gallery, Galerie Perrotin, Sprüth Magers, White Cube, and David Zwirner. Located in a bespoke structure in Regent’s Park, the Frieze Art Fair features a number of unique sections.

The legendary art dealer Marian Goodman will open a London outpost this fall. Located in an 11,000-square-foot Victorian warehouse on Golden Square in Soho, the Marian Goodman Gallery will join a number of U.S.-based galleries in the neighborhood, including Gagosian Gallery, David Zwirner Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, and Pace Gallery. Goodman, who has well-established galleries in New York and Paris, represents a bevvy of influential artists, including conceptual artists John Baldessari, Dan Graham, and Lawrence Weiner; photographers Jeff Wall, Rineke Dijkstra, and Thomas Struth; installation artists Annette Messager and Danh Vō; and painters Julie Mehretu and Gerhard Richter.

The London-based architect David Adjaye has helmed the renovation of the gallery space. Adjaye, who designed Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum for African American History and Culture, which is currently under construction, is known for his ingenious use of materials and his ability to showcase light.

Hauser & Wirth unveils its latest outpost today, Hauser & Wirth Somerset, set deep in the English countryside. It is the blue chip gallery’s sixth branch, after Zürich, London, Los Angeles, and a pair in New York.

Housed in an 18th century farmhouse in the outskirts of Bruton, in the West Country, this new venture is very much part of the commercial gallery’s family, but it champions a particularly philanthropic approach.

“It’s a place where we can do other things and experiment in different ways,” director Alice Workman told artnet News. “Artists can come and spend time through the residency program. It’s a place where we can really develop an education program.”

Internationally acclaimed gallery Hauser & Wirth is teaming up with respected curator Paul Schimmel to launch a multidisciplinary arts center in downtown Los Angeles. Operating under the name Hauser Wirth + Schimmel, the joint venture will transform a 100,000-square-foot flour mill complex into a contemporary art mecca.

The seven-building compound, which includes a Neoclassical bank building, a five-story mill structure, and a sprawling interior courtyard, will open in January 2015. Hauser Wirth + Schimmel will debut with a two-month pop-up group show before closing for extensive renovations.

Frieze London, the most highly anticipated contemporary art event of the year, opened on October 17 in a custom-built structure in Regent’s Park. This year’s show features 152 preeminent galleries from around the world offering works by well-known artists as well as promising newcomers.

The art world’s elite flock to Frieze to browse works being offered by established dealers including Gagosian Gallery, Lehmann Maupin, Lisson Gallery, Pace, White Cube and David Zwirner. This year’s offerings include five works by American pop artist Jeff Koons (Gagosian Gallery), sculptures by Swiss artist Urs Fischer (Sadie Coles HQ) and a monumental white odalisque sculpture by New York-based artist Jennifer Rubell (Stephen Friedman Gallery).  

Now in its second year, Frieze Masters, which presents works created before the year 2000, ranging from ancient era and old masters to late 20^th century works, is taking place at the same time as its contemporary counterpart. Exhibitors include Acquavella Galleries, Hauser & Wirth and Landau Fine Art.

During Frieze’s preview on October 16, the Tate Collection acquired five works by emerging and leading international artists thanks to a £150,000 gift from The Outset/Frieze Art Fair Fund.

Frieze London and Frieze Masters will take place through October 20.

Art Basel, the most anticipated art fair in the world, will be held from June 13-16, 2013 in Switzerland. A VIP preview and vernissage were held on June 11 and June 12 respectively and included the $12 million sale of Alexander Calder’s (1898-1976) Sumac (1961) by London’s Helly Nahmad Gallery.

Now in its 44^th year, Art Basel welcomes 304 international exhibitors to Messe Basel, a venue situated at the border of Switzerland, France and Germany. The fair presents the finest works of modern and contemporary art by more than 4,000 artists. Works on view include paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs, video and editioned works. The show is split into eight sectors – Galleries, Feature, Statements, Edition, Unlimited, Parcours, Film, and Magazines – and allows patrons to explore the many facets of modern and contemporary art including museum-quality paintings, curated projects, and site-specific artworks.  

The remarkable roster of exhibitors includes Acquavella Galleries Inc. (New York), Castelli Gallery (New York), Gagosian Gallery (multiple locations), Hauser & Wirth (Zurich/New York), Dominique Levy (New York), and Lisson Gallery (Milan/London).

Art Basel offers a full program of events including symposiums, artist talks, and lectures. Featured participants include Massimiliano Gioni, curator of the 55^th Venice Biennale and Director at the New Museum, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London.
