Art Basel Asia Director Magnus Renfrew will join Bonhams as deputy chairman Asia and director of Fine Arts in September, he said by telephone today.

“This is a very exciting time to be involved in the Asian art market and building up an Asian collector base,” said Renfrew, 38, who will be responsible for boosting Bonhams’ classical, modern and contemporary Asian art offerings.

Renfrew oversaw Art Basel’s Hong Kong fairs in 2013 and 2014. The company, which runs international art fairs in Basel, Miami and Hong Kong, said it has not appointed his successor in an e-mail response.

FIAC, France's most important contemporary art fair has announced their new showcase for emerging international galleries.The official satellite event will present some 60 galleries from 12 countries specialising in contemporary art. (OFF)ICIELLE at FIAC will highlight new territories: young galleries and newcomers to the international art scene; emerging artists and those whose historic contribution has been overlooked. The venue Les Docks will contain a space spanning 3,700 m2.

The event will provide visitors with the opportunity to discover galleries whose exhibition programs demonstrate a particular aptitude for decoding the language of contemporary creation and a gift for revealing talents, old and new.

Masterpiece London, a high-end art and antiques fair offering an eclectic mix of paintings, design, furniture, and jewelry, kicked off its fifth edition with an exclusive preview on Wednesday, June 25 at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. The fair, which is located near London’s posh Chelsea neighborhood, got off to a strong start thanks to impressive sales and record attendance. Noteworthy visitors included collector Charles Saatchi, interior designers Ellie Cullman and Scott Snyder, fashion designers Zandra Rhodes and Tom Ford, and a number of museum leaders such as Jeffrey Munger, The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Curator of European Porcelain, and Stephen Harrison, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Curator of Decorative Art and Design.

A positive tone was set early on when Symbolic and Chase (London) sold a 1912 Cartier Corsage for more than $20 million. Other sales highlights during the preview included a pair of chinoiserie cabinets by Vile and Cobb sold by Apter Fredericks (London) to an American collector for a seven figure sum; a portrait of the Countess of Craven sold by Elle Shushan (Philadelphia) to English actress Diana Rigg; and Lynn Chadwick’s “Back to Venice” sculpture that was sold by Osborne Samuel (London) for £250,000. Strong sales are expected to continue through the weekend.

Art Basel, one of the world’s top modern and contemporary art fairs, opened on Tuesday, June 17, with a private preview that saw a number of impressive sales. Described as the “Olympics of the art world,” this year’s show features approximately 300 galleries from across the globe exhibiting the work of more than 4,000 artists, ranging from Modern masters to emerging contemporary artists.  

Welcoming an elite group of collectors, the opening night preview proved that the market for modern and contemporary art shows no signs of slowing down. Andy Warhol’s “Self-Portrait (Fright Wig)” (1986), which was being offered by London’s Skarstedt Gallery and carried an asking price of $32 million, was the most expensive work sold during the fair’s opening day. The silkscreen was snapped up by an American collector during the first 15 minutes of the event.

Frieze has announced the participating galleries for Frieze Masters. Following acclaim for the first two editions of the fair, this year sees not only a particularly strong representation of galleries from the UK and US but also an ambitious global reach. Dedicated to art from ancient to modern, Frieze Masters will take place October 15–19, 2014 on Gloucester Green, Regent’s Park, London, and is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

Described by the Financial Times as ‘Unrivalled among fairs worldwide for its quality, range, seductive displays and scholarly interest’, Frieze Masters is a carefully selected presentation of over 120 of the world’s leading galleries. Taking place at the same time as Frieze London, the two fairs ensure that London is the destination for the broadest international art audience and benefits from a crossover between audiences of contemporary and historical art.

Frieze London has announced the details of the 12th edition of their contemporary art fair to be held in Regents Park.  The fair unites over 160 of the world’s leading contemporary galleries under one roof. New for 2014 is a restructuring of the sections for participating galleries, introducing ‘Live’, a showcase for performance-based installations dispersed throughout the fair.

Frieze London will take place 15–18 October 2014 and is sponsored by Deutsche Bank for the 11th consecutive year. Frieze London is one of the world’s leading contemporary art fairs and brings an international art audience to the UK capital every October. For the third year, Frieze London will coincide with Frieze Masters, a fair that gives a contemporary perspective on historical art, which also takes place in Regent’s Park, London. Together the two fairs bring an unrivalled range of art together with an international art audience and benefit from a crossover of visitors.

While it seemed like Frieze was snagging all the satellites this year, at least one fair is moving its date back to align with the Armory Show. Pulse New York has just announced that it will move to March for the 2015 edition of the fair, which also happens to be its 10th anniversary. From March 5 to 8, during Armory Arts Week, Pulse will set up shop at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea.

Art Dubai announced today that next year’s edition will take place from March 18 to 21. The fair’s dates will be particularly convenient for crowded art world calendars, as it will coincide with both the Sharjah Biennial and Design Days Dubai. The biennial in Sharjah, fifteen minutes away from Dubai by car, has become one of the foremost events at which to see art specifically from the Gulf regions.

For the ninth edition, Art Dubai’s extensive program of artists’ projects, including a live radio station and cinema, will continue. This includes the five-day Global Art Forum, which will feature 40 speakers; an exhibition of work by winners of the Abraaj Group Art Prize; and Campus Art Dubai, a year-round art school for artists and curators based in the UAE.

The highly-anticipated contemporary art fair Frieze New York is currently underway on Randall’s Island in Manhattan. A spin-off of Frieze London, which launched in 2003, Frieze New York includes a full roster of workshops, lectures, and satellite fairs. Now in its third year, Frieze New York features over 190 of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries, with 53 participants from the fair’s host city.

A vibrant mix of established and emerging dealers, Frieze allots two sections, Focus and Frame, to rising galleries. Focus galleries are less than ten years old and exhibit curated projects conceived specifically for Frieze New York. The Frame section, which is dedicated to galleries established less than six years ago, presents solo shows and is overseen by Berlin-based curator and art writer, Raphael Gygax, and Tim Saltarelli, who is a New York-based curator and writer. Industry heavyweights, including David Zwirner Gallery, Gagosian Gallery, and Thaddaeus Ropac, are exhibiting works by minimalist Donald Judd, Pop artist Ed Ruscha, and German painter Georg Baselitz, respectively.

The Miami art fair PULSE just kicked a little sand in the face of its rivals.

The contemporary art fair plans to relocate from downtown Miami to a spot along the beach this winter—a move to lure more visitors and stand out from the crowd of more than a dozen art fairs that hit the city every December. Fair director Helen Toomer unveiled the new location in an interview Thursday.
