Gap has announced a partnership with the contemporary art fair Frieze, kicking off with the New York fair in May and continuing with Frieze fair in London. As part of the partnership, Gap has designed two unique outdoor experiences, called Gap White Space at Frieze, in collaboration with New York-based architects, Leong Leong, to welcome guests at the Frieze Art Fair locations in Randall’s Island, New York and Regent’s Park, London. These experiences are named after the White Space rooms found in select Gap flagship stores across the globe. These rooms feature and test the brand’s newest and most cutting edge items, allowing shoppers to experience Gap product in a unique and exciting environment.

The 27th edition of The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) opened to the public on March 14 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The show, which is widely regarded as the world’s leading art fair, brings together 275 of the finest art and antiques dealers from around the globe. Offerings include everything from Old Master paintings and antiquities to 20th century design and contemporary art.

This year’s show began with a V.I.P preview on Thursday, March 13, which saw a number of big-ticket sales. Galerie Odermatt-Vedovi (Paris) sold a mobile by Alexander Calder to a European collector for around $2.6 million and Van de Weghe Fine Art (New York) sold Pablo Picasso’s “Tete couronnee” in black crayon on paper to a Belgian collector for $485,000.

A number of important works are being offered at this year’s fair including Vincent van Gogh’s “Moulin de la Galette,” which will be exhibited by Dickinson (New York/London); a double portrait of Sir George Villiers and Lady Catherine Manners as Adonis and Venus by Sir Anthony van Dyck, which is being shown by David Koetser Gallery (Zurich); and three works by Damien Hirst, which are being offered by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art (London/Leeds).

TEFAF runs through March 23. 

A spokesperson for the The Merchandise Mart’s Chicago International Antiques and Fine Art Fair announced that after 16 years, the show will come to an end. The fair, which is held each spring, drew over 100 exhibitors offering everything from antiquities, americana and tribal art to modern masterpieces.

Chicago will not go without an antiques fair as the Palm Beach Show Group will hold its inaugural Chicago International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show from April 25 through April 28. The Palm Beach Show Group’s CEO/President, Scott Diament, announced the fair in May of last year and has since gotten the Women’s Board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago to host an opening night champagne reception on April 24. The Palm Beach Show Group produces a number of highly-anticipated art fairs including the LA Art Show, the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show and the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show.

The Merchandise Mart ceased hosting its high-profile annual modern art fair in 2012.

Back in March, officials in charge of the European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) announced that they were talking with Sotheby’s about launching a high-end art and antiques fair in China. TEFAF, which takes place in Maastrich each year and is widely considered the finest art fair in the world, has just announced that TEFAF Beijing will not be taking place in 2014.

The fair was going to be a collaboration between TEFAF and Sotheby’s joint venture with China’s state-owned Beijing Gehua Cultural Development Group with Sotheby’s taking a percentage of sales from the fair. TEFAF released a statement saying that “a high-end art fair, as presently envisaged, in Beijing is not viable at the current time,” but many believe that dealers were not keen on giving a percentage of their sales to the auction house. In addition, most of TEFAF’s high-selling items such as old master paintings, antiquities, and fine antique furniture, are not in-demand among Chinese collectors.

TEFAF Maastricht will take place as planned from March 14, 2014 through March 23, 2014.

Art Basel Miami, one of the most highly-anticipated art events in the world, is currently underway. This year, the show, which draws over 50,000 visitors annually, is hosting more than 250 of the world’s leading galleries. Art events extend beyond the Miami Beach Convention Center where the fair is held to museums and galleries across the city.

Exhibitors from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa will be present at Art Basel Miami offering everything from modern and contemporary art masterpieces to works by emerging artists. Exhibitors include Acquavella Galleries, Gagosian Gallery, Gladstone Gallery, Howard Greenberg Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Hirschl & Adler Modern, Paul Kasmin Gallery, Lehmann Maupin, Pace, White Cube, and David Zwirner. Offerings range from paintings, sculptures drawings and photographs to films and installations.

Art Basel Miami Beach will take place through December 8.

The Salon: Art + Design, which premiered in 2012, is taking place at the famed Park Avenue Armory in New York City through November 18. The show opened with a festive cocktail party hosted by Margaret Russell, editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest, on November 14.

The fair welcomes 53 international dealers including Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts (New York), Galerie Downtown Francois Laffanour (Paris) and Adrian Sassoon (London). Offerings include modern art masterpieces by such luminaries as Gerhard Richter, Edward Hopper, Egon Schiele and Henry Moore, as well as 18th century French furniture and an assortment of Chinese decorative art and pre-Columbian antiquities. Organized by legendary fair producer Sanford Smith + Associates in collaboration with Paris’ Syndicat National des Antiquaires, The Salon offers a wide range of historic and contemporary works to cater to a variety of collectors.

The Venice Biennale, a major contemporary art fair that takes place every two years, has welcomed its 400,000^th visitor, marking a major attendance milestone for the event, which is in its 55^th year. The fair’s turnout was up 18% from its last iteration in 2011. The Biennale still has until November 24 to rack up new attendance.

In addition to the particularly high visitor numbers, this year’s Venice Biennale set a single-day attendance record on November 2 when 7,331 people made their rounds at Venice’s Giardini and Arsenale, where the fair is held.

Art Basel, the most anticipated art fair in the world, will be held from June 13-16, 2013 in Switzerland. A VIP preview and vernissage were held on June 11 and June 12 respectively and included the $12 million sale of Alexander Calder’s (1898-1976) Sumac (1961) by London’s Helly Nahmad Gallery.

Now in its 44^th year, Art Basel welcomes 304 international exhibitors to Messe Basel, a venue situated at the border of Switzerland, France and Germany. The fair presents the finest works of modern and contemporary art by more than 4,000 artists. Works on view include paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, photographs, video and editioned works. The show is split into eight sectors – Galleries, Feature, Statements, Edition, Unlimited, Parcours, Film, and Magazines – and allows patrons to explore the many facets of modern and contemporary art including museum-quality paintings, curated projects, and site-specific artworks.  

The remarkable roster of exhibitors includes Acquavella Galleries Inc. (New York), Castelli Gallery (New York), Gagosian Gallery (multiple locations), Hauser & Wirth (Zurich/New York), Dominique Levy (New York), and Lisson Gallery (Milan/London).

Art Basel offers a full program of events including symposiums, artist talks, and lectures. Featured participants include Massimiliano Gioni, curator of the 55^th Venice Biennale and Director at the New Museum, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director of the Serpentine Gallery in London.    

Today, May 13, 2013 marked the end of the second-ever Frieze New York. One of the most highly anticipated art fairs, Frieze’s New York iteration took place at Randall’s Island Park and featured approximately 180 of the heaviest hitting contemporary art galleries from around the globe.

Along with its primary offerings, Frieze New York included two separate sections, Frame and Focus, which were dedicated to promising up-and-coming galleries. This year’s fair also featured seven site-specific commissions, a sculpture park, and a series of panel discussions and conversations led by high-profile artists, writers, and cultural commentators.

Frieze New York kicked off with a VIP opening on Thursday, May 9, which attracted throngs of the art world’s most elite collectors. Top sales that day included Sigmar Polke’s (1941-2010) Nachtkappel (1986) which was sold by Paris’ Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac for $4 million; an Anish Kapoor (b. 1954) sculpture sold by London’s Lisson Gallery for $764,500; and a painting of a flying tiger titled Tri Thong Minh, which was sold by New York’s Paul Kasmin gallery for $950,000.

The sister fair of Frieze London, which launched in 2001, the 2013 edition of Frieze New York was the largest stateside version of the show to date.

A 16^th century religious tapestry that was stolen from a Spanish cathedral in 1979 and sold at auction three years ago was returned to Spain on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 by the United States customs service. Special agents from the Homeland Security Investigations division of the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement seized the tapestry from the undisclosed Texas business that had purchased it for $369,000 in 2010.

The wool and silk tapestry, which depicts the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, was stolen from the Cathedral of Saint Vincent, Martyr of Roda de Isabena in northeastern Spain. After the work appeared in a Brussels art fair catalogue in 2010, Belgian, Spanish, and U.S. investigators pieced together that a Belgian gallery owner along with two partners from Milan and Paris had acquired the tapestry in 2008.

The tapestry was given to Madrid’s ambassador to Washington, Ramon Gil-Casares, on behalf of his nation at a ceremony at his residence.
