On Tuesday, April 1, at 10AM, the Antiques Dealers’ Association of America (ADA) will launch its inaugural online antiques show. This innovative show model allows collectors around the world to browse offerings on their computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. The digital marketplace will open to participating dealers and patrons at the same time, providing all interested buyers with an equal chance to acquire the show’s most sought after objects.

The ADA’s online show will run around the clock until Thursday, April 3, at 10PM. This unprecedented accessibility allows buyers to visit the show on their own time, despite busy schedules, unpredictable weather or location. A variety of dealers will be offering American antiques and fine art, folk art, Americana, Native American art, and decorative objects. Prices will be clearly listed on the website and each item will be sold with a guarantee of authenticity.

Judith Livingston Loto, the president of the Antiques Dealers’ Association, said, "The ADA is thrilled to bring online antiques shows to the realm of art and antiques. The world of e-commerce has been growing and, while the ADA and others in the field will continue to offer quality material at traditional shows,  with this online buying opportunity we are providing collectors with the means to conveniently shop from home from the same dealers they'd see at a show. All prices will be stated up front and there is no pre-buying."

The Antiques Dealers’ Association of America was established in 1984 as a non-profit trade association. Its main objective is to enhance the professionalism surrounding the business of buying and selling antiques. Each of the ADA’s members are committed to integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct in the antiques trade. To be accepted to the ADA, a dealer must have at least four years of experience in the antiques business, must be recommended by a committee of peers, and is required to sign an agreement promising to abide by the ADA’s bylaws.

On March 29-30, over 800 works from Academy Award-Winning Director Jonathan Demme’s art collection will be sold during an auction at Material Culture in Philadelphia. For 27 years, Demme has collected self-taught art by contemporary Jamaican intuitive painters and Haitian and American outsider artists. The 1,050-lot sale spans from the 1940s through present day.

After acquiring a small painting by the Haitian painter Wilson Bigaud in 1986, Demme made the first of many trips to Haiti. The director learned Creole, befriended many local artists, and became a regular at the Centre d’Art, which showcased some of Haiti’s greatest artistic masterpieces. In 1997, Demme curated “Island on Fire,” an exhibition in Manhattan that featured over 100 Haitian paintings from his collection.

A weeklong auction preview will be held at Material Culture from March 22-29. Haitian paintings and sculpture will be displayed by region, alongside works by American self-taught artists such as Purvis Young, Minnie Evans, and Walter Ellison. Demme’s collection also includes Americana wood carvings, tramp art, weathervanes, and canes.

Next month, the Antiques Dealers’ Association of America will kick off its inaugural online antiques show. Merchandise Mart Cancels Chicago Antiques Show

A spokesperson for the The Merchandise Mart’s Chicago International Antiques and Fine Art Fair announced that after 16 years, the show will come to an end. The fair, which is held each spring, drew over 100 exhibitors offering everything from antiquities, americana and tribal art to modern masterpieces.

Chicago will not go without an antiques fair as the Palm Beach Show Group will hold its inaugural Chicago International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show from April 25 through April 28. The Palm Beach Show Group’s CEO/President, Scott Diament, announced the fair in May of last year and has since gotten the Women’s Board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago to host an opening night champagne reception on April 24. The Palm Beach Show Group produces a number of highly-anticipated art fairs including the LA Art Show, the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art & Antique Show and the Baltimore Summer Antiques Show.

The Merchandise Mart ceased hosting its high-profile annual modern art fair in 2012.

The fourth annual Dallas International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show will kick off with an opening night preview party on Thursday, November 7 at the Dallas Market Hall. Each year, collectors, curators and art lovers from across the globe flock to the high-profile event to browse the selection of furniture, silver, fine art, antiquities, porcelain, manuscripts, Americana, jewelry, textiles and more.

This year’s show will include a Designer Showcase featuring room vignettes created by five leading local interior designers. In addition, guests of the Dallas International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show will be able to take exclusive tours of the show floor with Miller Gaffney, founder of Miller Gaffney Art Advisory and one of the stars of PBS’ hit series Market Warriors.  

The Dallas International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show, which is organized by the Palm Beach Show Group, will take place through Monday, November 11.

Important Historical Works go on View at the Morgan

The Morgan Library & Museum in New York is currently presenting a selection of exceptional documents from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, one of the country’s leading collections of Americana. Reflections on a Nation features documents from the Revolutionary, early national, antebellum, and Civil War periods that represent an array of transformative moments that took place throughout the history of the United States.

Highlights from the exhibition include the only surviving copy of a 1776 edition of the Declaration of Independence printed in the South, a first edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a letter written by George Washington to secretary of war Henry Knox, and a letter written by Frederick Douglass to Mary Todd Lincoln. In it, Douglass thanked the president’s widow for giving him her husband’s walking stick, which he said was an indication of Lincoln’s “humane interest [in the] welfare of my whole race.”

Reflections on a Nation will be on view at the Morgan Library & Museum through January 12, 2014.

The prestigious Philadelphia Antiques Show announced that they have appointed Catherine Sweeney Singer as Director of the event. She will be the first person to fulfill the newly implemented position. As the Director, Singer will work with exhibitors, the Show Board, and the Advisory Committee to help all branches meet their short- and long-term goals. The Kentucky-based art and antiques show management company, Keeling Waingwright Associates, previously oversaw the Philadelphia Antiques Show.

Singer is well known in the art and antiques world and beyond as she has served as Executive Director of the seminal Winter Antiques Show in New York for the past 20 years. In addition, Singer is the Director of the American Art Fair and has consulted on the recent iteration of Asia Week in New York and The New York Botanical Garden’s annual garden antiques show. Prior to her event planning, marketing and exhibition development endeavors, Singer was the first Associate Publisher and Advertising Director of Art & Auction and for the re-launch of Art & Antiques.

The Philadelphia Antiques Show, which is in its 53rd year, is one of the finest Americana shows in the world. It will be held from April 26, 2014 through April 29, 2014 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The Newport Antiques Show Opens to the Public

The Newport Antiques Show, which is organized by the Newport Historical Society, will kick off July 25, 2013 with a gala preview. The show will open to the public on Friday, July 26 and run through Sunday, July 28. Established in 2007, the highly anticipated show presents an impressive selection of Americana, paintings, furniture, folk art, jewelry, and decorative arts.

Exhibitors at this year’s show include William Vareika Fine Arts Ltd., Oriental Rugs Ltd., Roberto Freitas American Antiques & Decorative Arts, The Cooley Gallery, Diana H. Bittel Antiques and Arader Galleries. The 2013 loan exhibit, Windows on the Past: Four Centuries of Historic New England, highlights the artifacts and 36 historic sites that make up the largest, oldest and most comprehensive regional heritage organization in the country.

The Newport Antiques Show, which is held at St. George’s School in Middletown, RI, benefits the Newport Historical Society and the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County.

Shelburne Museum to Stay Open Year-Round

On August 18, 2013 the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT will open its new Center for Art and Education. Historically a seasonal museum, the Shelburne will stay open year-round after the Center’s inauguration for the first time in the institution’s 66-year history.

The Center for Art and Education, which was designed by the Boston-based architecture firm, Ann Beha Architects, boasts 18,000-square-feet and will allow the Shelburne Museum to expand their exhibition offerings as well as implement new programming. The Center is part of the $14 million capital campaign “The Campaign for Shelburne Museum.” The campaign includes an endowment to maintain the center as well as the installation of a fiber-optic communications network throughout the Shelburne’s site, which spans 45 acres.

Founded by pioneering American folk art collector Electra Havemeyer Webb (1888-1960) in 1947, the Shelburne Museum holds one of the most remarkable and diverse collections of art and Americana. The museum’s 150,000 holdings include Impressionist paintings, folk art, quilts, textiles, decorative arts, furniture, American paintings, and various artifacts dating from the 17th to 20th century, which are exhibited in 39 different buildings. Webb collected various 18th and 19th century structures including houses, barns, a lighthouse, a jail, and a steamboat to house her collection; 25 of the buildings are historic.

New York Americana Week Show Happenings

Kicking off New York City’s 2013 “Americana Week” show schedule is The New York Ceramics Fair (January 23–27), with an opening night preview party on January 22. At the Bohemian National Hall (321 East 73rd Street) for the third year in a row, the Ceramics Fair brings together forty galleries from England, Europe, and across the US. Opening the evening of January 24 with a gala preview to benefit East Side House Settlement, the Winter Antiques Show, 67th and Park Avenue, marks its 59th year as the most prestigious antiques
show in the country.
